Don't know just when I bought the Fat Boy MAPP kit, must
have been just after they first started selling it. I
don't use the yellow bottle for a lot, mostly when I need
a little more heat than propane or a little less than
the Oxy/Act.
So it's been feeling a little light these past few months
and I thought I pick up a new bottle to have on the shelf
when I ran dry.
It seemed kind of odd when I couldn't find the Fat Boy
bottles on the shelf and I figured they just didn't want to
stock that size. Upon closer examination of the small 'top
heavy' bottles I see they are not labeled MAPP but MAP-Pro.
So I go on line this morning to find out what the deal is
and can't find any of it any where, Burns-o-matic's site
makes no mention of what happened to it and then I start
reading where the only plant that made it faded away and
it is not coming back.
Not only is the new stuff that Burns-o-matic is selling not
as hot but it's not available in the larger more stable
bottles either.

So------once again, an excellent product, gone down the
drain never again to be seen.

For heat in between propane and oxygen acetylene I like a plumber's "air acetylene" torch with a B sized tank. I originally bought two sets new and now pick them up at flea markets and junk shops for less cost than the gas in the tank.. I keep saying I don't need any more and then can't pass up another tank or setup dirt cheap. I initially had 2 tanks filled but that was 12 or 14 years ago, they last a long time. Several I have are Prestolite but my favorite is an all brass/bronze nickle plated Smiths torch. Just need to find a variety of tip sizes for it, or order them new.

For more portable try an MC size tank, same torch kit.

Just checked Home Depot and this one is marked as Mapp

I like the convenience of being able to keep this torch
on the shelf, in a cabinet or on the back of the work bench
Grigg. And the MAPP/air flame does put out enough heat to
turn a fairly decent chunk of metal bright red/orange.

Oops, read it again Dennis, that's marked Map/Pro not MAPP,
different animal. I believe that's just Propylene where the
MAPP was methylacetylene-propadiene propane.
And----it's not in the fat boy bottle, which is much more
stable sitting on the work bench.

Well, I guess it can't be both. I was looking below under Specifications. It shows Fuel Type MAPP. But up in the Product Overview it says Map/Pro. Prior to this thread I didn't suspect there was a difference.

This is what I've found after looking for several days at
dozens and dozens of sites:

"MAPP gas is a trademarked name, belonging to The Linde Group,
and previously belonging to the Dow Chemical Company, for a
fuel gas based on a stabilized mixture of methylacetylene
(propyne) and propadiene. The name comes from the original
chemical composition, methylacetylene-propadiene propane.
MAPP gas is also widely used as a generic name for UN 1060
stabilised methylacetylene-propadiene (unstabilised
methylacetylene-propadiene is known as MAPD). MAPP gas is
widely regarded as a safer and easier-to-use substitute for
acetylene. In the spring of 2008, true MAPP gas production
ended in North America when production was discontinued at
the only remaining plant in North America that still
manufactured it. Current products labeled "MAPP" are, in fact,
MAPP substitutes. These versions are stabilized liquefied
petroleum gas (LPG) with high levels of propylene."

darn! I used that stuff for plumbing. Safe easy and hotter than propane. Made quick solder joints on copper. And hot enough to heat stuff to almost cherry red. And the fat bottle was stable.

Denny, was working big box at the time, remember this at that time http://www.cpsc.gov/en/recalls/2012...cylinders-wisconsin-due-to-fire-hazard/. When mapp gas came back was map/pro not mapp gas. Something is not right. Why take something that works, recall it under safety, and replace with something only half as good. Seems to me if you have the only factory making it, You have the market,

I'm with Grigg, have always had a free-air acetylene torch, when the tank needs filling just switch it with the tank on the oxy-acetylene cart

I picked up one of these at a pawn shop some time ago.

It is handy and self contained and can bee hooked up to a large acetylene tank in an emergency. The tip is similar to a tip I bought over 50 years ago with to flow lead with before we had Bondo. Back then we called them a green flame tip.

A lot of it has to deal with which turbo torch you have,the box store turbo torches are pedestrian grade junk for the most part.
I bought mine at the hvac supply house for around $100.00 it just screws on to a map gas bottle,Ive silver soldered 3" copper with it plenty of times.
I gave my old b-tank torch away years ago.
