i think this has been asked before but i,m unable to find the thread
where is the frame number located on a 1951 gmc 451 as at present i,m having a dispute with the DVLA which is the uk equivalent of the DMV they have issued a V5C better known here as a logbook /registration document
which i suppose is the equivalent of a us registration title and in there wisdom they have dated my truck as a 1948 which it is clearly not so i really need to find the frame number to rienforce my argument with them
thanks
mike

I do not think a frame number was used by GMC in your year.

Is there an ID plate on the inside of the glove-box door or between the hinges on the driver's side of the cab?

frame numbers weren't in general use until after 1955, but I think some GMCs had numbers stamped on the frame rail at the front of the pass side - if not there, nowhere .... also note that GMC didn't change up numbers yearly, very likely that 51 continued a series numbering from 47 .... look around here

thanks ,red,
i,v studied that but i,m not much wiser as i can,t find any mention of a 451
i,v cleand the frame both sides and can,t see any numbers i,v got the parts identification plate of the glove box door
and the serial number on it reads as follows
model 451
serial 15187
engine 270
f,axle clark f460
r,axle eaton tspd 16600 ratio 6.50/9.04
trans clark 202v ,, 5dd.
brakes vac
wheels motor 6 stud

which is all ok eccept the serial number isnt what the dvla has used to register the truck
and its been converted to air assisted brakes by having the vac servo changed for an air one
she,s set up as a semi tractor, and has an after market comppressor and air equipement all of which looks to be factory options but no mention of it on any plate anywhere

what doe,s the HC stand for ==heavy commercial ??
any information anybody can offer me would be most gratefully recieved
i had threatened to sell this truck as i,m going through some hard times both financially and health wise but i just havnt got the heart to sell and intend restoring it and finding/building a suitable trailer
so as i said i,d be most gratefull for any help

Check out www.oldgmctrucks.com for Tech. Info., on your truck. I've never found a frame stamped number on any '47-'54 model truck, I've disassembled. Do you still have the "GMC Parts Idetification" Tag, on the back side of the glove box lid ? "HC" is just a model number for '47-'51 model Heavy Duty Trucks.

"There are also multiple letter codes for larger trucks indicating a COE, tandem axle, or diesel engine. GMC didn't really look at truck "years" so much as at did model runs which in many cases ran for multiple years."

see here, and for the HC451 see here - the letters should indicate a 50-51 truck, a 48 would be FF451, print out the list and take it to your officials

H = 1950 and 1951 production
C = Conventional Cab
45 = 450 series
1 = 137" wheelbase
15187 = regular sequential chassis serial number

There are no numbers on the frame so you can stop looking. I suspect that truck is a '51; turn down door handles and vent windows?

You might look on the outside of the starboard frame rail, near the front spring shackle mount, large stamped letters.

'37 GMC T-18 w/ DD 4-53T, RTO-610, 6231 aux., '95 GMC running gear, full disc brakes, power steering, 22.5 wheels and tires.
'47 GMC 1 ton w/ 302, NP-540, 4wd, full width Blazer front axle.
'54 GMC 630 w/ 503 gasser, 5 speed, ex fire truck, shortened WB 4', install 8' bed.
'55 GMC 370 w/270, 420 4 speed, grain, dump bed truck from ND. Works OK.

Ed, You won't find a number on the frame rail, of the 47-55.1 model years. I've looked on numerous trucks. It is stamped in that location on '46, & older GMC trucks.
