The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Paint and Body Shop Weld Through Primers?

About 10 years ago I used a primer that could be welded through. Heat did not affect it and there was no adverse affect in the weld. It was used for seams and overlapping welds. Is it still available or what do any of you do in these areas?

The stuff is called "Weld Through" I use it whenever I have a lap joint that I can't get to the other side after it's been welded.

Who makes it?

Try looking in local auto supply stores who deal with auto body shops. I think the aerosol weld through stuff that my body shop at work uses is made by 3M.

Just about everyone makes a weld thru primer. My favorites are SEM and AUto Tech my least favorites are NAPA Martin Senour, Sherwin Williams and DUplicolor (all the same product in different cans) it is way too thick and just a plain pain in the butt to deal with. I use at work one distributed by Windsor that works pretty good.

Hey Martin, since you mention Windsor weld through primer as an O.K. product, I'm curious what you could tell me about their basic paint line. Do they make decent stuff? :confused: I recently discovered Windsor paint products at a local auto supply shop and the pricing seems REALLY reasonable! I'm hoping to have my daily beater Astrovan ready to be painted come spring, so budget is important-HOWEVER, I don't want to see my best friend have spent the time to paint it, only for the paint to peel off in six months time. :o Any thoughts?

MARTINSR-I saw the Windsor line of paint products at a Canadian chain store called PartSource. They are an offshoot of our Canadian Tire chain, probably equivalent to Manny, Moe and Jack for you folks in The States. My friend who will be painting my Astrovan works in a fleet body repair shop in Toronto. One of his co-workers there told him that the Windsor paint is used by Maaco Auto Painting chain shops. The stuff is reasonably priced...I just wonder if it would be one of those "you get what you pay for" situations...

I have to assume that they are simply distributers and not makeing it. So the question would be who is makeing it?
If you can find there web site (I couldn't) I may have some clues as to where it is being made.
