Both look different from the filter in the first post. 1955 was a canister with hoses. It was mounted on the top right-front of the engine. Given the port locations on my canister, I am wondering if it is not AC/GM at all. Maybe Ford or Chrysler despite what the seller's tag read at the time. I was just getting into Chevy inlines at the time with little knowledge. Likely it was cheap though.

I posted that information in agreement with your comment regarding your filter most likely not being a GM filter for a 265 (or other early) GM V8.
There are many other possible sources of a by-pass oil filter. Sears, Montgomery Wards, and Western Auto were three large sellers of non-Auto maker oil filters.
It would be interesting to know what brand/make it is.
