As I have posted previously, I have just acquired a 1948 Chevy 3100 truck. There is a key lock on the passenger door but not the driver's door. How then do you lock the truck when away?

Hi clhaney, this is a common question because it seems so goofy today. You can do a search on this site and find out all about it. But basically you lock the drivers door with the little inside lock then slide across the seat and exit the passenger side. I'm guessing most people do as I do and get out the drivers door, open the passenger door and lock the drivers door from the little inside lock, then lock the passenger door. Not a big deal once you get used to it.

When I put my door handles back on I reversed them. I put the one with the key lock on the driverside. It's on a 58 GMC.Larry

On his 1948 the lock is in the door and not in the handle.
do as described above.
1. Lock drivers door with inside door handle.
2. Slide across the seat and exit through passenger door, then lock with key.

I appreciate your replies. I am not aware of any small lock on the inside of the driver's door. All I have is the two handles, door and window.

Push the door handle forward with the door closed. This is assuming the handle is properly installed, pointing down and slightly forward.

They are correct! Lock the door from the inside and then slide over and get out the passenger door.

The idea was you parallel park along city streets and don't get out into traffic. Also, you could then unlock and open passenger door for your girl, then she reaches over and unlocks driver door.

Grew up driving Model A's and '40's trucks...you get used to it.

Just move the handle in the opposite direction than you would to open the door. You should feel it move into the locked position.

This is not such a silly question,I only found out how to fully lock my '50 fairly recently.

I knew of the single passenger lock (obviously) but I would lock the drivers side, scootch over the seat then try and lock the passenger door with the internal handle before I shut the door, then try to lock it with the external keyed lock......DUH!
Needless to say this didn't work so I just left it unlocked on many occasions...

I've only had the truck 11 years...... blush

I have a 1x1 oak stick that I keep on the floorboard. I reach in with it from the passenger side and give the driver's side handle a whack to lock it. I then lock the passenger side with the key.

Sometimes it's a pain to slide over if you have a bunch of stuff on the seat or pass. side floorboard.

Not what OP asked but I guess this goes back to a time when you were supposed to exit the vehicle on the passenger side (At least it was a law here). I know two folks who failed their Road test because they forgot to wait for the instructor to get out first.

Yeah, I had to ask the same thing. I thought someone had switched handles on my 57 Bigbolt.
But to stay correct, leave the key lock on the passenger side and slide across the seat. However this is a task in my LCF. The gearshift and park brake handle is in the way, when you are 70 and weigh 185 lbs.
Also try sitting under that big steering wheel, and the seat is all way back.
Folks must have been smaller back in them thar days.
