I have an opportunity to get a 79 Firebird rear end at a great price and I was wondering if it would be a good choice for my 56 Series 2 Chevy pickup?

It all depends on what you are trying to accomplish. The first thing to consider is that it is going to have a 5 lug bolt pattern which does not match the front unless you are planning a 5 bolt disc brake conversion. It will also require welding the spring pads and possibly a u-joint change. Wheels will also be required. In addition the gear ratio may not be a good match for your existing engine/transmission combination. If everything is being changed out then it may be a good choice. If you are going to leave everything else stock and need better highway performance, put in the factory overdrive transmission. It's cheaper, less work, and no modifications required. Fred

I've just welded in the cross member for a TCI IFS front end. I do have a 5 bolt pattern on the front end. Also, I've purchased a crate 350 engine, but have not yet figured out what tranny or rear end I should use. I am a software developer, not a mechanic, so I'm kind of clueless when it comes to this sort of thing and am relying on the suggestions of those "in the know". Lol. I just want it to be a nice driver, comfortable on the highway, no racing.
Thanks for your input!
