Looking for some secondary input on my VIN. Vin Buster came back with nothing and the other resources under Tech Tips left me feeling neglected (no '65/'66 love...)

I've concluded it is a 4000 series 102"WB, but not much else seems to match the resources I have come across as of now.

VIN: DD v4008F23643E

Also have a ID plate on the inside of the glove box that states to reference the plate prior to ordering parts. Assuming this will have a good bit of info I'd like to have.
4 Rows of stamped Lettering/Numbers. Any resources to decode this? I can post the lettering and numbers to this thread if someone wants to take a stab at it.

Cheers!

Engoi,

You might get some more information about your truck and its VIN from the 6066 GMC Guy website at http://6066gmcguy.com/TwoTon.html . Good luck. I went through this with a 5500 model a while ago.

There is plently of Chevy info out there but I always had trouble trying to de-code GMC Vin's online.

I could probably tell you more just by some pictures, if you have some available.

Tried 6066 GMC Guy, couldn't make heads or tails of his ViN listings in comparison to my VIN (other then I believe it's a 4000 102"wheelbase.)

Here's some photos if these help at all.

Cheers and thanks

Engoi,

The 6066 GMC Guy decoding worked for my GMC 5500 truck except for the part about the wheelbase. Your pictures looks like my 64 GMC 1500 pickup rather than my 66 GMC 5500 truck, but this could be a difference between models that year. I hope Bill can be of more help.

Looks to me like your truck has a 305C motor, NP435 transmission and a 2 speed rear end with a 7:95 low range and 5.83 high range gear.

If the truck is all original, it is either a '64 or a '65.

Also, all of Don's info above seem to be correct.

The truck sure does look familiar to me. Did it come from SW Virginia?

Also, originally I thought this might be a 1500 series when looking at the pictures but when I saw it in person I knew it had to be a bigger model. The frame alone screams 2ton+ looks like two freaking I-beams underneath. Plus the dual rear axel.

I may try sending an email or phone call over to GM, maybe they can help clarify?
Though I doubt they give 2 plops about an old '65 truck that wasn't part of a computerized vin system.

Enjoi,

I am looking at this again while putting off plumbing repairs (I would rather work on trucks than houses). First, I am wondering what makes you think the truck is a 1966 model? I originally thought my 5500 was a 1965 model because that is the year given on the registration form. But it turns out that this truck is a 1966 model built and sold in late 1965. I am also wondering about your comment on the 6066 GMC Guy VIN decoder for large GMC trucks. I know it is not easy to follow, but the parts are mostly there. To start, I don't know what the leading DD stands for, but it is also on the top line of the tag for my 1964 1500 pickup, so I doubt that it is part of the VIN. When I look at the rest of your VIN number, according to the 6066 GMC Guy site, V = vacuum hydraulic brakes, 40 = model 4000, 11 = 120" wheelbase (this didn't work for my 5500), F = 1964 to 1966 model year, 23643 = number 13,642 off the assembly line, and E gives the GVW class (which I did not see described). The site also mentions that the older style cab was still available on conventional trucks in 1966, so this does not pin down the model year. However, I would be surprised to find a 305C engine in a 1966 truck. Good luck with your work on this.

Titled as a 1966 'TRUCK' no series or model info, so let's just call it an assumption on my part. Though, I have not pulled block numbers, axle numbers, trans numbers to confirm anything yet due to the massive amount of mud where it sits and the need to do some serious cleaning to remove years of crud blocking the stamped numbers.

First the DD was throwing me off as the only D I could find was Diesel and the engine was clearly not a toroflex. Nor would there be reason for "DD" double diesel. So It had my head spinning as on the 66 VIN listing page there were a few DD prefix VINs, but again I had no reference to the DD meaning.

Otherwise I thought I had figured it out, 4000 series 108" wheelbase but all in all wanted the opinion of other folks who were more familiar with this age of truck. My oldest vehicle before this was a '81 Land Rover. So once again, default to those with more knowledge, which I certainly hope to gain from these forums and the pending wrench-mania that will be my next 3 months. (ambitious much? why yes I am.)

Cheers for taking the time to decode for me.

Although I tried to get GMC Books through the years, it seems like I would always end up with Chevrolet Books. If you couldn't get the info you needed over at the GMC Guy, try the GMC Truck Club. Someone over there may have a way to decode your VIN specifically.

The site is at: http://6066gmcclub.com/forum/index.php

Keep us posted on it.

The only trim change to identify 1966 and newer (up till today) is
the GMC lettering under the grill.

1965 and earlier the letters were in script form.
Starting with 1966 production block letters were used, and still are.

Hope you enjoy your new truck

This guy knows his stuff. Suscribe to his "Youtube" link, ask a question, and he'll probably have an answer for ya! Check out his '64 4000,pulling a tandem trailer! I LOVE the end of the video, when a '49 2-ton Chevy, pulling a trailer,"blows his doors off"!

I've seen that video before, but it was sure worth watching again. That truck is one of the rare ones where it is only a 4000 Model, but yet it has the Wide Front Fenders on it. The 4000 Models and even most 5000 Models from '63 to '66 usually have the narrow fenders. Looks like it was ordered with a heavy front axel. I do believe I noticed 10 Lugs on the front.

Well thank goodness Christmas season is over. I can breathe again. I went out to spend some cleaning time with the truck today and got through a good 2" of gunk to reveal the engine stamp plate. Now I know it's a 305V6 but im curious as to if anyonr can decode it further, GM6066 guy didn't have any info on 305s that ended in a letter other then 'A'-'E'.

My stamp reads: 3050I907. The only letter being an 'i'.

Just curious on anyones speculation. Teardown begins tomorrow, with a build thread to start for those interested in following. Will add picture of engine stamp and atart build thread when back at a computer, on my phone now.
