Did the factory put anything on the inside of the outer fenders on a 1950 3800? Were they painted same as the exterior?

Thinking about using an undercoating but the inner fenders will protect the undersides pretty well. Want this truck to be a nice driver, not a show truck by any means. Advice?

originally any undercoating was an option, and likely only on the underside of the cab .... haven't seen any documentation about paint on underside of the fenders, but I'd bet they were primer black with some body color overspray around the edges, like the hoods .... a good 'elastic' undercoating helps protect the paint job from star cracks that can be caused by stones thrown from the tires, inner fenders are no protection from that

Bruce,

Most people have found a semi-gloss black paint on the underside of fenders.

An undercoat might have been applied by factory/dealer/owner/no-one.

Go ahead and use an undercoat over good undercoat/paint.

My 52 had nice shiny forester green paint under the 1/2 inch of Highway Department provided free rust preventative (road tar)under the front fenders. Not enough made it to the rear fenders to save the paint, if there was any originally applied to save. That road tar preserved the forester green paint on the parking brake bracket which the inner fender bolts to, solving the mystery of what color it was originally painted.

I used a gallon of bed liner on the whole underside of the cab and fenders. It was roll on so you can lay it on thick

I too will use bedliner on the underside of the cab and fenders. I actually used it on the bare frame too and love the stuff.

Well I went with an auto-store shelf brand spray under coating and after spraying and letting it set for about a week I could rub the stuff off with my finger (pretty disappointing).

So I pulled that stuff off, and bought a better quality paintable undercoating from UHC, it was about twice the price of the cheap stuff. The paintable undercoating went on much nicer and within a couple of hours was touch-dry and solid as a rock. Ya get what ya pay for!

POR-15,my logic being a nice smooth gloss finish won't hold onto dirt and mud like a textured finish.
Did my front and rears along with the rest of the underside.

5 minutes with a pressure washer and they look like new again...
