But, No way to provide a hot spark on start. What is the cost? More or less than a new coil and resistor? They work fine and cost, or availability would be the only reason to use one.

If they worked on highway vehicles the manufactors would have used them. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. "This item is a traditional round 12 volt coil but has a built in reducer. Eliminates the need for outside reducer EL181 when changing to a 12 volt system, includes mounting bracket....Can be used on 6 cylinder engines from 1937 - mid 1955 when the 6 volt system is changed to a 12 volt. (Remember the ignition points in even a 12 volt system will only operate on 6 volts, through the 1970's)...Sold each...Made in USA".
This is the coil I have been running on the 54' 235 in my 50' (12-volt converted) for the last four years. No external resistor, no burned points or other issues.
