Does anyone know if the 12 volt coils with the built in resistor do they work better than having an external resistor ?

Simple and reliable. But, No way to provide a hot spark on start. What is the cost? More or less than a new coil and resistor? They work fine and cost, or availability would be the only reason to use one.

I'm using one and no issues. 12 volts with the old 6 volt starter so it spins pretty darn fast. Never had an issue.

The internal resistance coils are made for low RPM & few cylinder engines, like tractors. If they worked on highway vehicles the manufactors would have used them.

This is from the Jim Carter catalog for item EL158

"This item is a traditional round 12 volt coil but has a built in reducer. Eliminates the need for outside reducer EL181 when changing to a 12 volt system, includes mounting bracket....Can be used on 6 cylinder engines from 1937 - mid 1955 when the 6 volt system is changed to a 12 volt. (Remember the ignition points in even a 12 volt system will only operate on 6 volts, through the 1970's)...Sold each...Made in USA".

This is the coil I have been running on the 54' 235 in my 50' (12-volt converted) for the last four years. No external resistor, no burned points or other issues.

Pertronix makes a 12 volt internal resistor coil.Flame Thrower Pt# 40511 Black. This coil is suppose to be a much hotter spark.

Like the "Beating a dead horse" emoticon! thumbs_up
