My '53 Chevy has this strong thumping vibration as I get into the 30-40mph in 4th gear.
I can't seem to get the truck to go over 42mph in 4th gear.
It gets worse when I let up on gas.
Is this a transmission problem? I have a floor shift 4 speed. The differential looks great. I re-did the drive shafts/universals.
Also - who made these 4 speeds?
This is a 53' truck with a 1961 235 - could it be a mounting problem with the older trans on newer 6?

That would be my guess too.

Sounds like a tire problem to me as well. The speed issue is more likely a different problem, perhaps a mis-adjusted clutch. The transmissions were more or less the same for the 4 speed, that shouldn't be an issue. They were a GM produced transmission, manufactured at the Toledo Ohio plant.

I was thinking tire also - however, vibration nearly stops on acceleration and suddenly increases in intensity when I let up on gas.
Seems like tire thumping would be related to
speed only?

Does the thumping go away after a few miles? If not it's likely not a tire. Bias ply tires flat spot when they sit leading to a thumping ride on cold start. As the tires warm up the flat spot goes away.
