My 52' came with a pressed piece that looked 'aftermarket'. I thought I got lucky when I obtained a cast piece w/ cast numbers on back at a swap meet. Anyways, the heavy cast is truckside. I know the repro ones are pressed out of stainless steel. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2001 Posts: 27 Member | | Member Joined: Jun 2001 Posts: 27 | I actually have an NOS one in the box, and it is pressed SS, I have two rough ones that are pressed, and another one that is what I believe to be an early takeoff which is also pressed, The early takeoff is particulary interesting as the fellow I bought it from, also had a grill and headlight bezels that were what I would consider early takeoffs. The grill looks like it came from a truck with not many miles that must have been in an accident, as it is riveted, and painted in a way that makes it very original, a perfect indoors stored version of a blue and waldorf white grill.
My take is that the pressed is original, Now with that bit of information, I have seen the cast ones, but am not sure maybe they were made both ways? Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending the 36th annual Antique Auto Parts Swaper in San Diego. Six hours of walking and gauking. Anyways, one of the vendors sold, what appeared to be, every chrome looking part for every car/truck ever made. I asked him the same question also. And Spanky, you appear to be right on the money. There are 3. I have a 52', and I really thought that the one I pulled off was a chepo repo. But I really think it's a stainless pressed plate with severly rusting floating clips (4) on back. But, you know what, I like the pot metal best! More heavy duty. Built to last. I think i'll keep the 'un-original' on the truck. | | |
