The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Paint and Body Shop rebuilding rusted cowl

I am presently working on my first frame up restoration. A 58 fleetside that was purchased new by my grandad. kind of a sentimental rebuild. The step panels, rockers, cab corners and cowls are toast and in need of rebuild. I can find replacement pieces for all but the cowling. I presume they are a d.i.y. project. Any advice, insight etc anyone can give would be very helpful and greatly appreciated.

If the rusted part can be cut out and is suitable for a pattern I could make you one.

Almost anything can be fabricated by hand. It's time consuming but a complex section can be rebuilt, piece by piece. All you need is some new metal, a cut-off wheel, snips, a MIG welder, project board for making patterns, and lots of patience. Metalman, how would you make a replacement panel that is not normally available with a repro panel? I've spent many hours rebuilding difficult areas like rotted out rear/front windshield openings but if you have a better way, I sure would like to know about it.

THANKS FOR THE ADVICE. I'VE HAD LITTLE EXPERIENCE WORKING WITH FORMING OF SHEETMETAL HOWEVER I'M NOT ONE TO WHINCE AT A GOOD CHALLENGE AND CONFIDENT I CAN PULL IT OFF.

CAN ANYONE SUGGGEST A WORTHWHILE BOOK AND OR VIDEO THAT WOULD GET ME HEADED IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION?
