I've been putterin away here and there this week (in between raindrops) and I finally got the left rocker panel sub-patch fabricated and installed, and then tonite I got the new rocker panel itself in.

Here's what I was faced with after I took the old rocker panel off:

It wasn't pretty. So I made a sub patch panel out of galvanized sheet metal. I don't have a machine shop with stuff like a metal brake and so on...so I used more low-tech methods. I clamped the metal to the workbench and hammered the hell out of it until it cried for mercy. Then I did a test fit:

It seemed pretty close, so I riveted it in. Then I re-primed everything with Zero-Rust and finally tonite I got the new rocker panel installed:

I also had to test fit the new sill plate to see what it would look like. I think it's quite an improvement.

Tomorrow I'll work on gettin the last of the bed primed and the inside of the bed painted a nice obnoxious red. And I may just slap some Moon disks on the wheels to see what it looks like. We might just have us a cruisin rat truck after all.

I like the sill plate! What year is that ... and where did you buy the sill plate?

This was before the rocker panel transplant.

I got the sill plate from Classic Industuries. Not the cheapest..but they had 'em in stock.

With any amount of luck, I might get the last floorboard patch and the rest of the priming done this weekend.

A friend of mine put 3/4 ton springs under his 66 1/2 ton. It made the truck look and handle better. It rides about the same as with the 1/2 ton springs.

My first ever truck was the 64 with a v8. It had come from IL and had rust through everywhere you looked. People always commented on the large holes in my floor. I always said it was for quickly getting rid of contraband in case we were pulled over. That and ventilation. The springs were totally gone on that truck and every wire hung down. Yet it always ran and hauled a lotta junk to the dump. Until I folded it up against a tow truck that had stopped on the onramp. But, that is another story.

Funny you should ask. I decided to cut the tailpipe and muffler off this morning in order to get ready for when I install the headers and Purple Horny glasspacks. (And to irritate my neighbors.) I had to get in and sit on that plastic seat. Compared to a Lexxus with the heated leather memory seats it felt like a...well...a plastic table. Not comfy at all.

The real joke came when I cut the tailpipe out. I just laid my Sawzall on it and started wailin away...and it was out in just a coupla minits. Problem? No muffler. None at all. I fired it up and it's a wee bit louder than it was, but I don't think there's enough compression in that sucker to violate the law, even with straight pipes! I guess a rebuild is in order down the road.

Hey, man...ya takes what ya can gets, yanno? Ain't never gonna win no beauty contests...but I don't plan to lose any parties, either.
