"Kansas City Confidential" (1952) is now on Turner Classic Movies (B/W not color).

2-3 shiny, new 1951 Advance Design Deluxe Panel Trucks are shown at the beginning during the hold-up. The belt-line pinstripe looks to be at least 1/4" wide. This is much wider than pinstripes I have seen on 1954 Advance Design trucks.

It is nice to see a movie that has these old trucks in new condition (with bright paint and bright stainless and chrome trim), rather than seeing old trucks only as dull, worn-out relics.

It was my understanding that 54s didn't have pin striping, only earlier ADs.

I check out every old AD truck I see sitting out in fields, and have been investigating pinstripes. I find that the cab pinstripes were indeed 1/4 inch wide, and the lower edge of the stripe was 1/4 inch above the lower belt seam. Although being hand drawn, there was variation along the stripe. Probably accounts for some people (Jim Carter) saying the stripe is not that wide.

I'd love to see a detailed photo of the exact location of the pinstripe. All the books I have do show a pretty wide stripe (a lot more than 1/8")and these are Chevrolet period photos.
If anyone would pass along some good detailed shots I'd be greatly indebted to you.

Thanks,

Tom

That's a great shot of an original pinstripe. Thanks for the heads up. Makes it easier for the striper if he can see what it's supposed to look like and it's whereabouts.

Tom

Chris,

Yes, It seems that the 1954 and 1955-1st series 1/2 Chevrolet trucks could have had pinstripes from the factory. The 1/2 ton trucks, with 16" wheels, also had a factory option for pinstripes. These are mentioned in both the Saleman Data Book and in the specifications manual.

My 1954 Chevrolet Suburban had a 1/8" cream medium pinstripe. I have seen 1/8" stripes and what looked like 1/4" stripes on earlier trucks. These may or may not have been factory-applied. Also, maybe different painters applied/different width pinstripes.

As they do today, I would be willing to bet that a lot of dealers added pinstripes at the lot in order to make the trucks more saleable. In that case they would vary and still be period correct.
