I suppose you old tmers are thinking: Here we go again, another question on a
VIN number. I have a '49 panel, VIN 6JPD8300.
Using the "search" section on this forum I now know
what the 6 means, what the D means and what 8300 means.
Don''t know what JP means.
Although titled as a 49, this panel has a 1950 flat, side cowl lever, not the knob like on previous years production. It also has conventional shocks and not the knee action ones.
Any help on the JP would be appreciated.

That does NOT mean you have a 1951 1/2T panel, it just means that's what the numbers mean. Anything can happen with titles/old trucks. There are AD gurus on this site that can tell you by seeing pics of it. Look in our gallery to pick up subtle differences in years. A big one is vent window started in 51. BUT doors can be switched.

Check the motor serial to help verify.

Jerry, to decode vins see the tech tip vinbuster, it says you have a '51 1/2T - and for a lot of detail differences in the AD years see this tech tip

as Bart points out, you have no idea what's been done to the truck over the last 60-some years, including if the title or ID tag was swapped from something else

Thanks for the info Bill and Bart. I had previously reviewed the TechTips/AD Spotting Guide and determined that the tube shocks and flat paddle side cowl lever were not 1949. At that time I couldn't decifer the J or the P.
The existing left side cowl vent is '47 through '50 and would rule out 1951 or later.

The right door is solid glass: '47 through '50. The left door has a vent, 1951 and up.
It's logical that one of the doors has been replaced with one from another model.

The hood, side badging only says Chevrolet with no series number, i.e. 3100 That indicates '51 or '52.

I just completed draining the rear diff. so inspecting the pinion gear again will not happen soon.

No heater. All doors handles are rotate to unlatch.

The guage cluster needs to be r&r'd so I'll check for a date there.


Based on the existing graphics, it is lodgical the truck was made in Oakland. The truck was used by Tasty Bakery in Bishop,CA.

I'm not all that concerned about the correctness of the title. It's legal and that's all that really counts for now. But it is very interesting to do the research AND it adds to my growing knowledge of AD trucks and my panel.
