good afternoon,
i have a 38 1/2 ton chevy pickup i am trying to fire up. the gas tank i tried to salvage and took to a shop to get it repaired but the guy said he could not guarantee anything and i brought it home and a few months later has passed and now the tank leaks, this is the first time i put gas. i rather buy a new one or a good used one. what years are interchangeable with the 1938?
any shops that have (new) one?
thanks in advance

I don't think anyone repops a 38 truck tank. I searched a lot for one for my 38, but had no luck. Sent mine to a tank repair company in Kentucky. Cost about $300 - but gauranteed for life with any fuel.

oldmemories, if you cannot source a new one why not use a tank sealer kit. There are a couple good ones out there. While nothing beats a new one I did the POR15 kit over 15 years ago with the tank in my '37 and it is doing fine. Takes a little time, better part of the day, but done right it will last.

I used Red-Kote on my suburban. Four years and no problems.

Ditto with Cletis, I used RedKote on my '38 almost 10 years ago & no leaks. I did have to braze the larger holes shut before lining. BTW the liner goes on the inside, a brush won't do you any good. If none of that sits with you, you might try these folks.

If you don't want to seal it yourself, another option would be to find a radiator repair shop that also does tank repair. The cost when I had mine done was about $150, as I recall.

A low cab '36 might fit, the '37 tank fueled from inside the cab, and then you have the '38 tank. I believe that is all the tanks of this size, so it sounds like you all ready know what you have to do. I made a tank for my '37 that fit under the bed, but a good metal worker should be able to make something to fit under the seat. It may not look stock, but its a option.
