I realize there has been many threads about engine color but I have lost my e-mail archieve in a crash. Anyway, what color was the 1954 Thriftmaster 235 ci. engine? What color was the 261 workmaster? The truck I have has been in the family since new and I strongly thought that the engine color was black, but most of the threads I've seen say it was light gray. Please set me straight (good luck as wife has been trying to do that for 35 yrs.)

I just replied to your mail message about the color. If I can find the PPG code, I will post it here.

Jim Carter sells the gray engine paint but provides no information on what kind of paint it is (which makes it interesting when trying to spray it - it turned to jelly when I used the thinner they suggested). Chevy Duty sells a blue paint and calls it gray (some people like their blue color). Some people have posted that a Ford engine-gray is a good match (I do not have the code).

I had some matched to The Filling Stations dark bluish gray which is real close according to some NOS parts I had. I had it mixed in PPG Concept single stage urethane. The number they came up with is DCC 36304, Dark Gray.

The 1953 and earlier blue-gray is a different color than the 1954 gray (at least, according to the VCCA article in the link above).

Bob Adler wrote an article in "Pickups 'n Panels in Print" in 1998 and gave PPG 34560 as a "fair match" to the 1954 gray engine paint.
