Did it turn out behind the back tire? I'm headed for the exhaust shop soon and wondering what was the original look ? | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 | 47-55 Advance-Design 31xx trucks:
I think that in all years the 3104 pickup had the tail pipe go straight out the rear.
Some years panel-body trucks had the tail pipe go out the side, behind the driver's side rear tire.
Maybe someone can post a link to a pertinent illustration in the Factory Assembly Manual?

The 47-55 Factory Assembly Manual will not help answer your question. Sorry, my posts here are of no help. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | I believe the pickups were originally straight back from the metal heat shield that was under the bed above the muffler, which would be toward the driver side, but turning out [and down] is a good idea

You say above the muffler. I thought it was supposed to go above the rear axle where the exhaust pipe comes over the top of the axle. Carl

I have a parts manual that shows exhaust routing, if you give me a few days I will post it.
When I had my exhaust done I brought the manual in to the shop so they could see the specs. But the guy at the shop said he had a "card" for my truck and didn't need to look at the book.
They routed the exhaust straight back, then a hump over the axle, then straight out the rear. I believe this is what the book shows. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2008 Posts: 325 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jun 2008 Posts: 325 | | | | | | Joined: Dec 2000 Posts: 3,399 Gas Pumper | | Gas Pumper Joined: Dec 2000 Posts: 3,399 | I just had may local muffler shop make me a stainless steel version of the original entire exhaust system. I took them an original untouched system and they made it look exactly the same. There are pics in "More pix in the bolt bucket" in my signature below, but I sort of ad-libed, the tail pipe part because I have a special trailer hitch installed. Its close to where its supposed to be. Hope this helps! | | | | | Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 10,271 Renaissance Man | | Renaissance Man Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 10,271 | I looked a Stove's pictures of the exhaust system. I have never seen some of the parts before on any truck. I thought that the muffler clamps were flat steel, formed round similar to the rear tailpipe hanger, but without the hanger portion. Could Stove's part's manual have included upgraded hangers and clamps for the purpose of updating the effectiveness of the system over the original design? Carl

If this is what you are thinking, that would be really cool to have about 4 of those. But just a little after that era, they just went the bent and threaded round stock. I think they should make them just for us vintage owners. Maybe you can discuss this with the President. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 10,271 Renaissance Man | | Renaissance Man Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 10,271 | Hey Deve, we are talking about exhaust clamps here. Have you been practicing your Evelyn Wood speed reading, or are you just hi-jacking? Carl

Follows that the same clamp manufacturer was tasked with U-Bolts for exhaust too. That vintage look was cool! | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 | guess I need to re-read, re-read, re-read this thread a few more times to try and figure out just what in the ell you guys are talking about!
The exhaust system in the scans look perfectly normal from what I can tell. What are these odd clamps you're talking about????

The system had a few issues the biggie being that the tailpipe would not engage the muffler. I had to carry it to a local exhaust shop and have them expand the pipe to fit over the muffler outlet. And, the tailpipe went straight out the left rear and turned down toward the ground. It was my understanding that Chevy started pointing the exhaust down so that when the tailgate was lowered all the way down, the exhaust would not be blocked by the tailgate. Of course this is only applicable to trucks without rear bumpers. I don't necessarily like the down turned exhaust as it blows up dust when in off road. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 3,596 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 3,596 | | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 | Thanks, Brad
I assume that tailpipe was used on pickup trucks throughout the rest of Advance-Design years?
I bought a NORS (GM part) tailpipe with that down-turned end, and I wondered if it was the correct style.

dg The clamp/hanger that I was referring to was the one at the front of the muffler, in Stove's picture. Carl
