Has anyone used a lower door skin to repair the problem area on the lower quarter between the door and the rear fender on a panel/burb?

Got pics of what's involved?

using the skin won't really be any different than just using flat metal for that area, not a complex shape - what's involved is cutting, welding, grinding sheet metal, & finishing, same as any other corrosion repair - if you can handle those processes you can find some details on body work in the paint and body forum

It is important to state what year on these questions. You can buy a piece that is for the "rocker" and possibly use it for the rib shape at bottom and around wells. Approx 40'' long. How can we give pics/advice of what's involved without seeing what's involved? Any metal should work, a door skin would work, 58-59 fleetside bed side pieces will work...... The semi-challenging part is the rib (as mentioned above re: rocker) but it is easy for someone with forming tools. Google: Flex Edge Wheel Arch . May help, may not. Bottom part of door skin available, 7" tall, $40. or skin from a donor door.

I have been told that people use the lower door skin for that purpose, on AD panels. You could check Metal Man to see if he makes them.

I'm using a lower door skin to replace some quarter rot in my 53 Suburban. So far I have only managed to cut the rust out. I have not gotten to the point of trimming the door skin to fit.

I got the repair panels I needed from Jim Carter…. American made as I recall and they have the proper fender bead rolled into them to blend in the
rear fender area. I needed that because the forward portion
of the fender cutout was rusted completely away. Also,
I welded up the gas tank hole, since I intalled a 20 gallon tank
where the spare goes.

Carters panel patches are all hand made by MetalMan [Wheelwright Restorations], who would no doubt make any other patches he could get good patterns for - contact info here or usually can find him on e-bay

MetalMan is where I planned on going for my rear corners which need replacing also but thought I could save some money by grabbing some door skin cut offs. Sometimes being cheap doesn't pay off.

Youngrodder...

Can you show me pic of what the area behind the lower rear quarter between the door and the rear fender is supposed to look like?

Anyone have a pic of this area cut away?

There also seems to be a rubber strip attached via a metal strip with screws to the body between the body and the running board. Of course that is destroyed by rust.

Yes, I can get you a couple pics. I hear you about spending money, but what I learned on my first truck was I spent ALOT of money on stuff that I could have easily made. This quarter repair is a good example. For me the rear fender arch was fine I just needed a small section appox 16" L x 7" H. In my case the lower door patch was cheap and should work fine.

Im also needing the rear corners for my panel. I contacted Jim Carter and asked if the rear corners had the bead rolled into them to match the bead around the fender area and they told me that there was no bead rolled into them. ohwell

Would the lower area between the door and rear fender have the bead rolled into it to match also?

I have sent metal man a message on his website but it keeps coming back to my email saying there is an error and its delayed. Does anyone know of another way to contact him?

Thanks for any help

he also makes that odd ball one off sheet metal stuff that fits ONLY the one ton AD panels. He made my repair panels that go behind the rear fenders, that are a bit longer then the 1/2ton parts. AND yes they do have that round lip by the fenders.

Wanted to ask if anyone has any tips or advice on how to go about getting the corners in?

Mine are pretty much rusted away so theres not much there to go by.
Remove the rear fender and go from there?

Any tips or advice is greatly appreciated
