I have done a "search" for my problem with my truck but I can't find the answer so...
I am posting my question.
My truck is a 1951 3600 216 with 3 on the tree tranny.
The problem, when I let out the clutch when I am in either 1st gear or reverse, I hear a loud "bang, bang, bang" noise which almost sounds like a bad conecting rod sound. I know it is not a connecting rod, this only happens when I let the clutch out. When I push it in, the noise goes away. The tranny shifts in and out of all gears fine and I have no driveability issues. When I take off from a standing start, it is very loud, I drive until I have to shift into second, and I can hear it again but its not as loud. The sound may be there when I shift into third, but the truck is so noisy, due to no insulation anywhere, that if it is making the noise, I can't hear it.
As soon as I push the clutch back in, not matter what gear, the noise goes away.
It is very embarresing when I pull away from a light or at a car show. I'm suspecting throwout bearing but I'm no expert.
Yes I have checked to see if the fluid level is ok and it is.
I know someone will be able to point me in the right direction.
Thanks.
Brad.

Motor mount/tranny mount....Never heard that kind of bang from throw out. Throw out usually sounds like a rattle can or bad radio station. Could be Ujoint also, I don't know the closed driveshaft system though. AD people will respond. A bad mount will hop more in lower gears due to torque load/gear ratio. Need to fix ASAP and not drive, can do some big damage. Are you sure it's from front area not rear end? A busted gear somewhere will sure bang! Tranny or rear. Settling down as shifting higher, leads me back to mounts or joints. 1st and Rev is a slight hint to a problem in tranny but they are both high load also. Let's see what the other folks have to say.

Just a guess, but years ago I had an old scout that made a similar sound. Turned out that a broken portion of one tooth on the pinion gear was the cause. It would still drive but sounded awful. Had to disconnect the rear driveshaft and drive 150 miles with just the front axle...long strange trip that was.

If the banging is loudest in 1st and Reverse it sounds to me like a broken/chipped tooth on the 1st gear. If it was the throwout bearing the noise would be consistent throughout the gear changes. When you push the clutch in it is relieving any load on the transmission gear sets. I would drain the transmission and look for chunks or take off the side cover and inspect the gears. Do it soon so you don't tear up any more gears.

Ok thanks for the replies everyone, I will drain the tranny and remove the side cover and hopefully I don't see any major damage.
I'll also inspect the motor and tranny mounts too while I'm under there.

I don't know if its the same problem, but in the end my Pinion was loose, and the PO had not installed a cotter pin.
Here is a link to the video/audio of the noise.

Here is a link to the disscussion.

801 Curt, my noise doesn't sound anything like that but thanks for the reply.
I'm going to do what you did and video the noise and post it here. Maybe that will better help someone identify the noise.
Thanks again.
Brad.
