The distributor is not locked down snugly. There's a big bolt head, and a sideways screw. It will still rotate 1/8 inch or so where hooked up to the vacuum advance. It runs better when I move it all the way counterclockwise. Do I need to replace the vacuum advance assembly? Or is this standard normal?

you should be able to grab the dizzy and rotate it by hand, that's the allowance for the advance, it runs best when you set it with a timing light, then let the advance can [and internal mechanical advance] do the moving .... check the shop manual

There is a place on the base of the vacuum can (a pivot) which wears, causing excess slop. There is some amount of movement (minor slop) on a new one.
