on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Aug 2014 Posts: 15 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Aug 2014 Posts: 15 | My 51' 1 ton has 17x5 3 piece rims. They are in good shape and I'd like to keep them. Right now my rear tires are courser traction (by cooper) and look to be in good shape with no dry rotting. My front tires look older than I am. 7.50-17 seem to only be available as specialty tires for big money. Is there a narrow tall 17" radial that will work on the old rims? The taller the better to offset the gearing. My courser tires are 34.5" tall. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,832 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,832 | Go to the Tire Rack site and type in all the specs on your present tires and a chart will show whats close or comparable. Might not be anything but it's worth a shot.

I'm thinking of trying to fit a 205 or 215 x 17 tire to my split rim and still use a tube. Not sure if it will work but lots of cheap tires around for less than 50.00. If you find a tire to fit let me know. One of the 16" rims that do fit and clear the front tie rod is off a 92 Dodge ram 2500.Some of the later model Ford 3/4 ton rims are supposed to fit too. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,963 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,963 | 7.50x17 are getting difficult to find. My 2500HD came with 17" tires. Once they get about 40k miles on them, I intend to use them on my one ton. Tire shops often have new takeoffs on hand. I recently bought one for $15 because there is just no demand for OEM 17" I ran a large bolt through a tie on my pickup when it had about 1,000 miles on it. They are not as tall as as 7.50, but I intend to replace the rears with a 3/4 ton third member which will give me all the speed I want. I will use a 16" tube in it because a 17" will fold. And 16" will stretch. Tire shops won't recommend this, but thats how we did it 50 or 60 years ago. Back in the day of tube required tires, folded tubes caused more flats than nails. Putting in a smaller tube fixes it. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2014 Posts: 15 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Aug 2014 Posts: 15 | Summit Racing carries Tornel 7.50-17 bias tires out of Mexico. With shipping they are not cheap. If I kept my bias rear tires an put a pair of radials on the front would it be so bad? I remember having bias in the back and radials on the front of my very first car 25 years ago and being told it was bad. But not noticing any problems. I was 17 then so nothing phased me. Haven't had a bias tire since. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 56 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 56 | I was at the Rod Journal's Revival in Baltimore, MD yesterday saw a lot of Rods that had that size tire, and a good bit were using Excelsior Stahl Sport Radial. Really nice looking tire. They're not cheap, but it's a good radial alternative. Coker - Excelsior Stahl Sport Radial
