Good article, but there's NO mention of the best 2 inline engines ever made! wink

The article states that the inline six is smooth because each piston (cylinder in the article) has a twin that is going in exactly the opposite direction. Which pairs is he talking about?

ALL engines with an even number of cylinders have pairs of pistons moving in the same direction at the same time. They're called "companion cylinders". One is on compression while the other is on exhaust, on the upstroke, and they run intake and power strokes on the way down- - - -exactly 360 degrees apart in the firing order.

Inline sixes run smooth because the three cylinder pairs are exactly 1/3 turn apart- - - -naturally balanced. 4-cylinders, V8's and V6's are trying to shake themselves to pieces all the time.

Not like any of these can't be balanced out. How many of us complain about our V8's, our Honda or Toyota 4 cylinders, our 90 degree V6's? And now we're seeing new 3 cyl. engines. They all run well and smooth, whether by balancing or proper engine mounting systems, and they live for 200,000 miles these days. I think BMW is doing a PR job trying to justify their inline 6 engines. They also sell V8's and other configurations. Much ado about nothing!

That second article that Tim pointed to is excellent. I was not impressed by the first article.

Neither are on my list of the 2 best. I'll drop a hint, though; Take a look at the top left corner of the screen. There's the answer to one of them, the other is it's corporate brother wink

I'll agree with that. The only things I see that they missed are the inline 8 and the V16.

How about the W8, W12 and W16 from the VW Group?
