Putting in the new gear, would you suggest putting any grease or lubricant in there before putting it back together?
The old part contained some oil, but mostly dirt.

do, I would use a light chassis grease. I'd stay away from a
heavy fiber grease like that used for axle bearings, that's
getting really hard to find but you may have some on your
shelf. Have used Lubricate in the past but I've found that
it dries out over time.
Oil isn't going to stay in there very long and this will
probably be the only time it will ever be lubricated.
