I put together this step-by-step sequence for replacing the seals in the universal joint ball for the first series Advance Design trucks. I hope it's informative, and correct. If anyone sees anything wrong, please let me know and I will change it as necessary.

I have the manual. I put together a step-by-step process, using information from the manual and from users on this site, to help me think through the process before tackling the job. I thought others contemplating this task might find the list useful.

In any case, I completed replacement of the ball-collar seals today. I was getting leaks from both the large and small seals. I have a couple of observations I'd like to share:

1. Be sure you have a pair of new lock plates for the universal joint bolts on hand, before you start the job. Luckily, someone suggested this in time for me to have the part ready.

2. The hardest part of the job was getting the threaded end collar over the driveshaft housing with the new (small) seal in place. It would not go unless I put the collar and one washer on first, then persuaded the seal into the collar with a special tool I had to make. I was not expecting this problem.

3. Three of the paper shims was the magic number for me. Four made the collar too loose; two made it too tight.

4. When I was finished, I added one pint of gear oil through the hole for the speedometer gear, as per the manual. After putting the speedometer gear back in. I removed the fill plug in the transmission to check the level; a lot of the gear oil I had added, ran back out. Not sure why.

5. The entire job took about four hours. So far, it looks like the leaks are fixed.
