I'm trying to find out if a 55-59 OEM Chevy/GMC turn signal option will fit on my 50 GMC column. I don't have the turn signal assembly in hand so can't do a fit check but the picture of one looks like it could easily be adapted. Anyone know???

my 44 chevy column has a turn signal adapter from the 50's, but I don't know what year the signal came from.. it's the arrow blinkers, and the piece on the column is a rectangle with rounded corners and a little throw lever... I don't have a picture of that part on my truck...

does this sound like what you are talking about?

The one began production as a assesory in late 54 and is a cup style configuration with the switching inside the cup that fits on the column shaft at the top of the column tube just below the steering wheel. It looks like a OEM part, not the clamp on type sold by aftermarket vendors.

I have the factory turn signal on my 57. I would think it would work on any column of the same diameter. Sorry, I dont know what that measurement is. Keep in mind that there is a raised area at 12 o'clock on the column that the assembly slides over to keep it from rotating on the column.(if I recall correctly). I guess you could fabricate something. I've been wanting to rebuild mine, do you know of a vendor who sells parts for these? If not I might be interested in replacing the whole assembly. And the cancelling ring is on the back of the steering wheel. I hope this helps.

Grant, I thought I had checked them both in the past but I will check again. Thanks for the tip.

the steering wheel is the same from 54 to 56 I believe, and the TF turn signal cup fits all 55-59, so it might work on earlier columns if the canceling ring can be fitted to the earlier wheel - the canceling ring, the actual switch w/ wires, and the small wedge piece that holds the cup tight on the column are all available at most any supplier - as well as the handle w/ knob - all ya gotta find is the cup

I could take any measurements ya want Grant, and pictures, as I've got a number of the TF units in the parts boxes

Actually, the one I ran across is for sale at Jim Carter's web site as a used part (garage sale item). I beleive it is a 57 to 59 and the price looks right. I've decided to hold off on mine for now since I have more pressing items to work than a turn signal. My left arm is still in realatively good condition for signaling! HA! But eventuallu I would like to have a more OEM style than the usual clamp on type....

Grant, Originally the clamp on style, "Guide 6004 Directional Signal" kit, was all that was availabe, on '47-'53 trucks, & some earlier cars. I've seen alot of '47-'53 G.M. trucks outfitted with the, "Signal Stat' clamp on kit also. Most of my GMC, & Chevrolet accessory Info. points to the Guide set. I like them best, because I think the glass lens Guide Directionals look "COOL". Is your truck a pickup, or big truck.
