It is a commercial bio-degradeable agent and is used for stripping everything from bridge spans to ship bottoms. Web site is: http://www.napierenvironmental.com/ Anybody had any experience with this product?

For us DIYers not only is it clean and nontoxic, but save to work with and won't burn the snot out your skin.
I never did know where they finally decided to market the products. Where is your friend getting his?
Oh yeah, they also make an Overpsray Remover that is great too.... | | | | | Joined: Jul 2001 Posts: 3,887 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Jul 2001 Posts: 3,887 | Bruce - is this the product "owner"? other pages on their site seem to indicate they've made deals w/ various coatings people incl ICI and PPG - handy for us up here that the origin is CDN! Napier put together a nice effort about 3? years ago to put their products into the automotive paint jobber distribution and man we had a good time with it promoting the heck out of it and then BIP! it was gone.
This really was a sweet line of safe and effective products for the DIYer and I was steamed when they jerked them.
I suspected reading their web site that the company was more interested in short term pay back of the investors than the long term success of the product and the automotive wasn't an instantaneous success. You guys know how slow you are to be convinced when something new comes along, don't ya? Too bad when the short term earnings become the be all end all in corporate think. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2003 Posts: 687 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2003 Posts: 687 | Keep us posted guys if you find an outlet for that stuff. I talked with a Removall rep from Napier and he suggested trying the "Hydro Strip 500" or the "Hydro Strip 502" to see which worked better for us. I did a Google search and turned up a dozen ICI locations within a 50 mile radius, one just 5 miles from my place. I won't be stripping for a while so if sombody tries the two let us all know which one works best.

they recommend 510 as strongest for auto strip, 210 milder [both spray on] and 220 for brush on - I'm gonna look for it locally

Where locally did you find an outlet?

I've had good luck with alkalines for lots of stuff from cleaning carbs to removing grease and paint. You need to keep the moisture level up to avoid creating hazardous dust which you sure do not want to inhale. I was thinking if this or another similar product really works well, I could possibly save some $$ for body sanding by the paint shop that my truck will be painted at, by doing the stripping myself. Though I might find this article too good to be true, what does it cost to simply investigate?

He said you do not want to use anything else for vehicles with old layers of enamels, etc.
All ICI stores locally carry the 502, 503 & 504 but not 500. So I have ordered some (1 gal).
4d9r, If you are thinking about doing it, do not order this number for I will have plenty to experiment with.
Funny thing, Last night at dinner, my wife asked what can I do to help cut the costs of working on the truck before giving it to the body shop. I asked her how good she was in stripping paint?

Also when you get the product ask if a person can use a high pressure washer to do the washing. It can be readily applied by conventional air, airless and HVLP equipment. The materials can be applied by brush or roller, but it has been determined that these methods generally produce a lower film build and inconsistent thickness of the applied product. Brush and roller applications should be restricted to small areas or where spray application is difficult or impractical."

I think the application methods throughout their series are pretty similar. DWELL TIME -The time required to lift a paint system will vary depending on: type of paint number of layers to the substrate temp of the substrate ambient temp Most paint systems will take between 1-6 hours to lift. When removing multiple finishes, there may be poor adhesion between the layers. In these cases the remover may lift layers prior to reaching the substrate. Remove the lifted layers and reapply. If the material dries before all paint layers are lifted, reapplication will be necessary. TEMPERATURE: Ambient and surface temperatures are critical during the stripping process. Optimum results are achieved with the temperatures in the 70-90F range. It is not recommended that Hydrostrip to be applied when the temperature is below 55F. Application in direct sunlight andhot surfaces can cause the remover to dry before the removal process is complete. If the surface starts to dry, reapply the remover. REMOVAL: Removal of residue can be completed by scraper, squeegee, wet/dry vacumn system or by high pressure (2,500 - 3,000psi) water wash. Disposal of solid paint waste in accordance with local government regulations. .................. And on a final note, how much is this stuff? Are we all sitting down? I think they should rename it liquid gold. You know that $100 dollar bill all of you carry in your pocket? Simply cut about 60% of it off and give it to the paint store. Keep the rest to pay for crying tissues and a beer.

You don't want to blast the toxic gunk all over the place, but may be able to build some visqueen setup to catch the liquid gunk and keep it for approved disposal. For sure, the lead dust that will occur if this stuff dries out, is a serious hazard. Maybe the wet vac could be used to suck the stuff off. I would start with just one fender or something small, set it up with visqueen to trap the stuff and try it out. Real estate people have been known to ask for disclosure of any known hazards prior to a sale. There have been folks caught up in this who have then been held up with very expensive cleanup costs and potential liability. Hope this helps. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2002 Posts: 2,841 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2002 Posts: 2,841 | Splashoil, Living in a major metropolis with tons of neighbors, I totally agree. I don't want this stuff to mess up my yard, driveway, etc. Lots of precaution will be taken. I am sort of confused with the wet/dry vacumn process. You think they are saying that while the stuff is still tender you can scrap it loose right into the nozzle of the vacumn? I wonder how dry the stuff will be during optimum removal time.

I also question running paintstripper through my paintgun.
Otherwise, you keep applying and removing with a squeegee and paper towels and stuff. This can all be bagged up. Then you pull out the power washer and clean up the residue. The runoff will be negligable.

In that case they put it on, then covered with plastic to hold moisture content while the remover attacked the paint. Then they scrapped the gunk off. All the stuff was bagged and tagged, shipped off to hazardous waste facility. Keep us dialed in on this. With over a dozen trucks, I'm very interested. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2002 Posts: 2,841 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2002 Posts: 2,841 | I wish it was summer time so I can test it in the idea temp situation. Removal is a water borne product that once applied soaks thru the paint and offgases at or near the substrate dis-bonding the finish. This leaves a semidry curly array of old paint. Pretty easy clean up with bondo spreader or the wife's good plastic spatula. Aircraft is a nasty carsinogenic product that dissolves the paint into a gooey mess that I'm sure you have all seen.... Sounds like they have beefed up the line to include maybe a little more powerful formula for some products. I know I got a pretty good idea just how good ZR was at sealing steel when the Removall wouldn't touch it in less than about 3 tries. The more pourous the finish the faster the soak thru. Again, darn fine, safe to use products, for us DIYers. Sounds like prices have drifted upward since we sold it. Seems like about $40 when we carried it. Oh well, lots of companies, lots of bottom lines. When I read this same thread a couple years ago I went and got a tub as the ICI place is close by. I brushed it on the firewall and then stuck some garbage bags to it and left it overnight. The next day I pulled back the bags and every bit of the factory paint came off leaving a gleaming bare surface. A scotch brite pad and it was ready for primer. I kicked myself I didn't do the whole thing like that. No mess,no stink,no irritation,no effort, I was in disbelief it was so easy. You can use a pressure washer but why? It all fell off. My tub was $60.00 cdn. but compared to the cost of sanding materials I would bet this method costs less than 1/3 of the hard way. I did both. I read the data sheets before I used it but liberal brushing and then sticking plastic against it worked better than I could have ever hoped. If you can get your hands on this stuff try it before sanding.

Since I have to work out in my "yard", I don't want to contaminate the soil in any way. Nor do I want to poison any animals.
I'll read more about this. Thanks for the info!
