Hi There! I just purchased a 1958 Chevy Apache Carryall Suburban with the "horizontal lift and tail gate" back doors. It has been painted and new interior and is running. I have been happily driving it around town! I do have alot of questions, though. For starters, I don't know what all the knobs, or places for knobs on the dash are. Also centered on the tail gate is what I believe is a third brake light(missing) located center on the tailgate door and is mounted on a swival. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

welcome to the garage, 2n1 - that style rear door is usually referred to as "clamshell" .... the dash bits you're missing are available, and here's the tail/license light you're looking for [+ next pics], scarce

Third brake light? I guess is was invented 30 years before I thought..... Not.
Bill has a good pic of labelled dash parts if you click on his "some TF series details". G-MO's is the real deal. I am obsessed with Suburban's and Panels esp. of the TF era. Colloquially, the GMC "Suburban" is referred to as a Carryall and the Chevy is Suburban. Chevy did start out using "Suburban carryall" for that type vehicle. GMC called their Cameo pick up: Suburban Carrier. Anyway, post some pics of your truck and dash. Would love to see it. I may have some parts. You can PM so as not to dilute this post to a wanted ad. Thank you so much for the information and photos regarding my 1958 Chevy Apache Suburban. They are extremely helpful! I have many more questions but will wait till I get the truck out of the shop. To red58, you have some photos of the third tailgate brake light and assembly. Are these for sale? I am really interested in purchasing if they are.

To bartamos – Does the back doors, whether the vertical, or “clamshell” have anything to do with whether the vehicle is a Suburban or Carryall, or just by the make GMC/Carryall, Chevy/Suburban?

I would love to hear any other info and what you think of my vehicle. I hope to drive it to a few car shows in the next few months. Very excited about that!

Suburban Carryall was the name GM/Chevrolet used in 1958 (and in other years), for both end-gate (3116) and rear-doors (3106).
