hey all, i recently found a 61 apache 10 custom cab in a nearby field, no engine or transmission but the rest is all there, and has been sitting in it's current resting place since 1978. the current owner gave me a price of 500 and no less, is this a fair price or do i need to try to haggle with him?

Indy, you should know by now a truck is worth what the seller will take and the buyer will give, if he won't take less, all that matters is what it's worth to you

The scrap price is maybe 1/2 of his asking, so I would say you may only be risking 250ish. Is there fleetside bed trim, which comes at a premium? Any salvageable parts/pieces if resto is not in the cards? How much time and space do you have to store and part out if resto is not doable once dragged out of the field?

well, it's a 8 ft stepside bed, and the body has its usual dents and dings, the hood is straight and cancer free if that adds any value to it (I have always loved the ugly hoods)and also has two elm trees growing in front of and beside it, making it a little challenging to get out of its resting place. it seems pretty restore-able to me and even if i had to part it out there is a lot of reusable parts. the doors still open and close pretty well for their age, too. i just want to see what you guys would pay for something similar.

Hard to say without photos. Those hoods are getting rare, the long bed is less desirable than a 6 foot, from a re-sale value.

If it's solid and doesn't need the full compliments of patch panels it's a steal at $500.

If it's a rust bucket and needs floors, rockers, fender patch panels then I'd pass.

And if the roof is rusted around the windshield I'd pass.

Hard to see rust if weeds are covering. Rust is the factor you should focus 80% on. Next is parts. 61-62 are pretty unique years. Windshields are very expensive for 60-63. Dash parts all there, a plus. Be very careful about rust above windshield inside and out as HRJ said. Check door bottoms. The other big thing to me is TITLE!!! Some patches are easy for DIY and some are not. Floors and fenders are "easier" than rockers, supports, door bottoms, structural. Windshield surround or door opening= near nightmare. Other valuable parts include good Grille, bumpers, wheels, hubcaps, seat, tailgate, hood and trim and emblems...and TITLE!!!! If much of that stuff is there and no rot rust: $500 is a good deal. The advice you got above my post is by some of the most experienced members, so take it in. IMO: The parts it has are way more valuable than $500 BUT that depends on where you live. Near big populations is good, rural means shipping big parts, not good. If you have a lot of swap meets in your area, real good.

oh, the other thing is the glass is perfect, no chips, yellowing, cracks, chips or bubbles. instrument cluster is all there (with tach i believe, will have to go look at it) no rust above windshield, floors a little rusty, but that doesn't scare me. and has the original spare tire carrier, but no title

Based on your description I bet 500.00 is not a risky price.

ok, thanks guys. It will probably be in the spring before I actually go and get it, (they told me not to worry about it going anywhere since it has sat in its current location for 36 years, a few more months won't make it go anywhere ) currently I am saving for a 1949 dodge coronet survivor car with only 69,025 miles on it for dirt cheap.



anyway, maybe in the spring I'll be back in here to pester you guys with more questions

In the northeast the 60-61 hood is worth the $500 if in good solid condition.
