54 chevy 235 in my 53 GMC 1/2 ton; the distributor has about 1/4" or
so freeplay on the vacc advance connection - is that normal? Starts OK cold - advance pulls distributor when revved above idle - but doesn't start easily when hot. Looked at Jim Carter - shows new vacc advance but not the connector screws or pin that moves distributor - wonder if mine is worn out. Do I have a problem?

That is common but it shouldn't have any free play. I was thinking the brackets come with a new vacuum chamber. If not you might be able to weld a washer where the elongated hole is & use a machine screw.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

This is what a new vacuum advance for the truck looks like. The clamp is not included.

Don't loose that clamp..it would seem that part is hard to find.

I've got some kind of rivet on the arm that comes out of vacc chamber - that's where the freeplay is. New photo looks like one piece - is it different?

May have another part of puzzle: truck is 53 GMC - looked at service manual for
GMC 228 engine, and the distributor looks like the one on my chevy engine.
So looks like whoever did the engine swap used the GMC distributor. The Chevy
manual doesn't have a photo or drawing of vacc advance so I'm guessing they're
different

The "rivet" in the pic is a "turn and lock" connection. If you take it apart you turn to release and then reassemble by inserting the new advance and when you turn it into place it locks so it won't fall off. The difference in the manual and what you have is the difference between a car advance and a truck advance. Get the straight truck advance and it will look like the manual. Now for a wild [censored] scientific guess...the GMC dizzy is the same as the Chevy dizzy. Now, if I am wrong some one help straighten me out. smile

That makes sense; was told the 235 came out of a 54 auto trans car and has hydralic lifters - so maybe that's why its different. Catalog link from shows only one option - and it doesn't look like mine. Don't know where to find GMC truck vacc advance - and maybe its not a big enough problem to chase. Thanks for info!
