Finally got myself a new tailgate at the weekend, spent the day yesterday painting it and masking and painting the letters. One thing I did notice was the re-pops lettering isn't quite as crisp a stamping, making them look a little 'chubby'.
I'll employ the services of a pinstriper to highlight the letters eventually. I also need to sort out chains and latches so it's bolted shut at the moment.

Nothing got done but more parts to put Marge together did arrive. In the past few days we've gotten our 2" dropped spindles & coil springs, shocks, door window felts/runners/etc and gauges. We have on order & waiting delivery of a few Cadillac mtr parts, Altman door latches and have leads on some misc stuff that is needed. The only thing left will be "Some Assembly Required"

Been working on it 5 months of Mondays since we drug it out of a barn not rolling or running and have it ready for the 2 weeks of car shows and cruising coming up, drove it to work pic..
Wire wheeled the road grime and tar and rust and other crud off headlight buckets... little rust problem, bit fixable. Had to order a new headlight adjusting spring too.
Ordered some new tires, messed around with the carbs. They're always seeping just a little. I think my fuel pressure regulator took a turn for the worst. Metering blocks maybe warped a hair?
I can explain it to you, I can't understand it for you.
I know my Carter Ball & Ball updraft HATED being run with no Fuel Pressure regulator.
I put on a 1960s 'Mileage Minder' with a built in Filter Bowl, and the old Carb is happy now.
Otherwise what I got done to-day was to install the little parts Kit in the top of my shift lever/column...two new little Buttons, the Hair pin Spring, and so on.
Somewhat tedious!!
But got it done and will go try it out here in a little while.
I am feeeling a stong tug to rub out and wax the old beast too..! But I might procrastinate on that for a while..Lol...

Thrift, I'm due for an overhaul in the next few months anyways. Complete engine, trans, rear end tear down/rebuild. Until then I'll keep messing with the carbs lol.
I can explain it to you, I can't understand it for you.
Get one of those old "Miliage Masters' and install it...see if the Carb likes it ( I am sure it will! )
Brings it down to like 2-1/2 Pounds or something...super 'friendly' then to the old Carburetors.
My poor old Carb was POURING Gas out of itself without the 'Miliage Master' regulator. The Float could not push against the Needle Valve hard enough to hold back the pressure the Fuel Pump is delivering.
I guess I have one heck of a ( stock, usual, old ) Fuel Pump or something! Lol.

Thrift, I run dual 780cfm double pumpers on an 8-71 blower. Far from stock. I regulate to 7psi with a 14psi electric pump. Still use it as a truck though, I hauled a jacuzzi for a friend yesterday with it lol.

Cleaning the frame of my 3100, at least it is bare and I'm not on my back doing it with crap flying in my eyes. Steve

1964 GMC 1000 305 Big Block V6, sm420, the next cab off restoration
Cleaned up the frame in the area where the new Danforth crossmember will be installed. Got the stiffeners welded in and the frame boxing plates tacked in place. got the spring perches tacked in place in the slots in the crossmember ready for test fitting in the frame. Next will be to find a camaro/firebird rack & pinion. Bought a 2 bbl manifold and carb from my local boneyard to replace the 4bbl manifold and Edelbrock on the 283. Also bought a rebuild kit for the 2 bbl. One more good weekend and maybe, just maybe I can get some cruising in before it snows. So far so good. Still need some POR15 for the crossmember because it sat for 10 months and accumulated some surface rust before I got around to working on it.
Yesterday I got the horn wire repaired (see separate post on horn wire). Also got he firewall painted black, so now the cab can be put back on the chassi. The recored radiator has been reinstalled and today we will restart the engine. Maybe this time she will not overheat. Had to spend some time repairing a Model A for a guy, generating cash, so I can afford some more Chev parts.
My transmission is still on the fritz so I can't drive it but in first or second gear, but I did enjoy washing the old truck yesterday and making it look shiny again. Then took a bit of rubbing compound to the hood and front fenders, then followed that with a good slathering of Turtle wax, then buffed it out to a really nice shine. I'll try to do the rest of the truck next weekend. The stomp starter had been feeling a bit different lately so I took a close look and noticed that the cotter pins holding the linkage to the starter had become bound. So I made a trip to Harbor Freight and bought a boxed assortment of those new pins that took the place of Cotter pins. Cleaned up the linkage shaft on the wire wheel then did the same with the spring. Put it all back together with the pins and it works perfect! Sure felt good to work on the old truck.

Sprayed some paint on the cab over the weekend, took a stab at some pin striping today, and will soon be ready to put the bed back on. Looking forward to taking my grandson for an evening ice cream again before the summer is over!!
BIG day today! Replaced the dome light bulb... hahaha
Funny you should mention that. I was playing around w/the switch on my 49's inside light when all of a sudden it started working. I guess we're both certified inside lighting techs now Dave
Another day cleaning a bare frame. Found a really neat way to get old undercoat off. Take a air chisel and sharpen it on a bench grinder. turn the air down and gently go to work, it moves it off nicely.

I adjusted the steering box on the '56 tonight. First time I had done one. I followed the '58 manual.
I suspect the box is a rebuilt from Jim Carter because it has a ME part number written on it with paint pen. However, I think the installer just slapped it on there and ran it without proper adjustment. It has had excessive slop since I've owned it. It feels like this helps but I haven't driven it yet.

took the 268h cam out of my engine after bending push rod. ive had so many problems with this cam in there. I went back with the original roller cam, lifters, and push rods. added a 600cfm edelbrock new timing chain and gears. now it runs sooo much better. love it. seems to have just as much power as with the cam and will idle when I put it in gear. much more fun to drive im very happy!
I just finished my break in at 585 miles. I used one new car 12V to drive my timing light. Its now right on and has lots of power. Adjusted the points too. Checked with my engine rebuilder (stock 216) and they said they no longer recommend the zinc additive as the oils companies said it messes with the oil chemistry. So I have decided to run Mobile 1 and we shall see what happens. Oh I adjusted the valves and now they are louder than before. I guess I'll do it again and go for the min spec rather than the max. Made my own hand crank and that makes the valve adj easy.
Changed the oil. Rotated tires. Adjusted brakes Greased chassis. Topped off grease in Shifter box. Greased distributor. Adjusted points. Set timing with vacuum gauge. Filled up gas tank. Lost accelerator spring on way home from gas station. The tab on the throttle linkage broke so that's the next time to fix. Very eventful day, I had planned on adjusting the valves when I got back home for the gas station but that'll have to wait until I fix the throttle spring situation.
Got the Danforth crossmember fitted in the frame and partially welded, Had to persuade it into correct position with a 4 x 4 block and a 4pound maul. Also had to use a couple of pipe clamps to help. Very stout and strong installation. Now if I could only remember where I left those new and expensive lower control arm bushings. This CRS is getting the best of me and I think it gets worse instead of better.
Addressed a long outstanding problem with my fuel sender, easy job on a stock in cab tank except for the fact a certain person chose to box the tank in as a speaker enclosure.
I also fitted the passenger side rocker to door seal and retainer,a job i'd been avoiding after installing the drivers one,and I thought the windlace was a p.i.t.a! Anyway.... got 'er done at last.

Took the fuel pump out of my '41. Cleaned out gas tank. Will be ordering a new pump tonight. Rebuild kit cost almost as much as new one. 73 years of gunk in the pump. My philosophy is better safe than sorry.
Sometimes you're the window Sometimes you're the bug
Busted some rust on the back window. One thing led to another, and I ended up in the cab. Bread
Looking good, judging by the water marks, that had been leaking for quite a wee while.
If I ever make it back over to Newport News I'd love to stop by for a look and a gab. The last time I was over I had to content myself with looking at Dodges,my buddy's a Mopar fan!

Put a kit in the 2 barrel for the 283. Glued the gaskets to the block for the 2 barrel manifold. Pulled off the Edelbrock 650 CFM and the 4 barrel manifold.Going back to stock carburetion. Should run not so rich and might save me some gas money. Will finish up the Scott Danforth crossmember and S-10 IFS next weekend I hope. Haven't driven the sub since March and I miss cruising and the local shows.
