Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Sep 2000 Posts: 114 Member | | Member Joined: Sep 2000 Posts: 114 | I'm getting a Sear Pro MIG welder for my Bday. It comes with a gas regulator, but no gas bottle. So, um, where do you get the bottle? And what kind of place do I look for in the yellow pages to fill it?
My first project will be to fill in the shift bar on my 41 Chevy car. PO ground it down wrong (where bolt goes through attachment at bottom end) so reverse sticks way up and first is level. (Even with housing rotated max. Its got a 49 linkage.)
For a fill weld, do I need gas? Can I use flux cored wire?
Thanks!

I ferget how much I paid for my bottle, but I bought it rather than renting . . . not knowing how often I will have to fill it up I figured buying was better. Even if you "buy" the tank for around $75 or so, it will not be a new one and you just trade it in when empty and only pay for the gas that way. Some farm stores have new tanks, you have to go fill them still, or trade that nice new one in on a beat-up returnable like above. The mix of 75-25 is the best. Think with gas you only use .023 wire, check your manual. .035 is usually the core size wire. Don't forget to change your wire drive rollers to right size wire. Gas sheild makes better/cleaner welds. You still have to knock slag off the core wire welds, just not very much of it is all.

I use a 20 pound bottle, lasts about l year or about 2/3 of a ten pound spool of 023 wire. I've always used straight CO2 for welding, may try the mix one of these times just to see difference in welds. | | |
