What are under the seat vents and back seat trim panel ? vent back seat trim | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,262 Bubba - Curmudgeon | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,262 | There is a hole in the "tray" under the seat and holes in the lower rear cab corners. The cab that breathes. I cannot find the illustration, but GM had a picture showing air-flow movement throughout (in/out) the cab. I think that Brad has a good illustration in his slide-show library. Jim Carter used to sell a cardboard panel the attached a a pick-up seat back cover. The search feature on JCs website is useless - he might still sell that cover. I do not know if it was used on all years or just used until the width of the pickup seat changed in 1950. | | | | Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 4,263 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 4,263 | Pretty cool illustration
Never seen a back of cab spare tire carrier before.
And it shows that strait newspaper running board | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 | It's refreshing to hear a computer science professor confirm my impression of Jim Carters Website. I've just bailed out of it and gone to a different vendor many times since they redesigned it. I mean, how much could it cost to have a pro design a catalog for you.
Heard about them for years, but I've never seen an AD with a back on the seat and to this day don't understand what the logic is for having one on a seat that doesn't fold down. I guess it's so you can point out to people that your seat has a back on it?????

DADS50, That's the "tray" under the seat that I referred to. In my Suburban, there was a round plug in that hole. The hole in the Suburban's floor, under the driver's seat, is larger and and irregular shape (not a circle).
I think Denny posted a thread on that hole and plug, speculating on the purpose. I think it was mostly there to allow water/moisture to exit the cab? I could postulate the possible air-exit/circulation due to Bernoulli-effect/principle air-movement (a principle that is re-named "road draft" in helping remove un-needed/wanted gases from inside the block/engine).
I have one of the cardboard seat-backs that I bought 15+ years ago from Jim Carter. I bought it before I knew that is was standard-cab/seat-specific and that it was not used in later A-D years. The cardboard seat-back is still in an unopened shipping box.

Click on your year and it lists the different categories.

His web-programmer also used "illegal" characters in the URLs for parts - this causes problems with some browsers and other programs.
Also, see how many parts have no photos (minor problem).
I still buy about half my parts from JC.

Also, see how many parts have no photos (minor problem). If you update your bookmark to www.oldchevytrucks.com/everything works fine, including the search feature, pics. No problems with some browsers and other programs. From there if you go to the "Parts Department" click on all the sub menus, you can go directly to the part you are looking for which includes a pic. Using Old bookmarks like www.oldchevytrucks.com/Catalog/creates the programing errors that you refer to. From that old bookmark, if you click on the 1947-55 catalog it takes you to http://secure.oldchevytrucks.com/1947-1955-1ser-Truck-Parts/departments/4/which has more programing errors and browser problems. And you are correct, from there if you search for parts you do not get what you searched for. So for those of you that are having problems with his website, all you have to do is update your bookmark to www.oldchevytrucks.com.From there the search function works fine and works with all browsers.

I think they were all round until '54. Don't know if they ever had a cork in them but it bugged me so I made a mold up to cast one for mine and a couple for the shelf. Seems that you could get water splashed up inside traveling thru a heavy down pour.
I think the holes were for draining the tool box if you got water in it, like if you hosed out the interior. After all, they were just work trucks.

My guess is the plug is to keep big things from dropping out the hole, and the hole is for water drainage and/or for the cab "to breathe".
