That plastic strip with the outside bead put between the fender and cab. Anyways. Does it come in different thicknesses?
TIA

Its the real deal and will look good .....at least as long as we live. | | | | Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 1,248 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 1,248 | I've used the chrome welting sold by J. C. Whitney.... They also have it for VWs and even offer it in other colors.

Are you guys using this because you want an original look or to stop squeaks or to keep trash out of the joint? The reason I ask is I was considering using a plastic washer between the fender and the bed and didn't know if that was a ridiculous idea or not.
Thanks

I like the look without the welting. | | | | Joined: Apr 2013 Posts: 165 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Apr 2013 Posts: 165 | Thanks GW. I tend to agree that, at least from the few that I have actually seen, the repo stuff just doesn't look all that great. I would love a picture from someone who had it come out the way they had hoped.

'52 I am very happy with the way it turned out. As you are probably aware the welting was only used on the front fenders presumably as both an anti-squeak and to keep debris from building up in the fender to cowl joint. The front end of the welt is tucked between the filler plate and front fender. welt The welting I used was very much like the original with the bead sewed to a cloth like material. Unfortunately I got this material with some other used parts I purchsed and don't know where it came from originally. | | | | Joined: Mar 2008 Posts: 3,750 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2008 Posts: 3,750 | Like Alvin I used the VW stuff, you can buy in I think it was a 25' roll. It's not expensive, and stops crud building up between the fenders and bedsides. 1950 Chevy Advance Design 3100 in ScotlandIn the Stovebolt GalleryMore pix on Flickr. I found a source for real rubber welting, and was happy with the results. http://cgfordparts.com/CATPICS/LOGOTHUMB/0000024352_0035000400.JPG | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,262 Bubba - Curmudgeon | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,262 |

As shown in his photo cutting those types of bolt reliefs is key to a good fit (and 3M weatherstrip glue). I sharpened a 1/2 pipe nipple on my bench grinder as a punch to make the holes and the cut the remainder with scissors. It has held up well and while the factory may not have applied it to the rear fenders I think it finishes them off. I will take a close-up shot but here you can see the welt on the rear. https://www.flickr.com/photos/advance-design_parts_co/8129208312/in/set-72157631867396207 | | | | Joined: Apr 2013 Posts: 165 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Apr 2013 Posts: 165 | I guess I figured that the welting worked from above but didn't work so great from beneath. I like the idea of the welting fitting the entire width of the flange.
Paul - what year vehicle did you use to get your welting?
Thanks for the help!

Thanks again.

I saw a video/tutorial somewhere along the web. Probably what I will do when time comes, I can't recall ever seeing a brown welting which is what I'd go for | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | you can make welting using upholsterer techniques, like this door seal custom made for my bus Bill | | |
