I think that's what it's called? That plastic strip with the outside bead put between the fender and cab. Anyways. Does it come in different thicknesses?

TIA

yes, fender welt - the thickness of the flap and the bead are standard from all I've seen, and pretty thin

If you want black and some good stuff buy some that goes on a VW. Its the real deal and will look good .....at least as long as we live.

I've used the chrome welting sold by J. C. Whitney.... They also have it for VWs and even offer it in other colors.

I never understood what this was for originally, to hide bad panel fitment? Are you guys using this because you want an original look or to stop squeaks or to keep trash out of the joint? The reason I ask is I was considering using a plastic washer between the fender and the bed and didn't know if that was a ridiculous idea or not.

Thanks

My 46 never had any. I used black cloth duct tape to avoid squeaks (not visible). I like the look without the welting.

Thanks GW. I tend to agree that, at least from the few that I have actually seen, the repo stuff just doesn't look all that great. I would love a picture from someone who had it come out the way they had hoped.

Here's a picture of the front fender welt on an un-restored '49 GMC '49 and my '52 GMC I recently completed. '52
I am very happy with the way it turned out. As you are probably aware the welting was only used on the front fenders presumably as both an anti-squeak and to keep debris from building up in the fender to cowl joint. The front end of the welt is tucked between the filler plate and front fender. welt The welting I used was very much like the original with the bead sewed to a cloth like material. Unfortunately I got this material with some other used parts I purchsed and don't know where it came from originally.

Like Alvin I used the VW stuff, you can buy in I think it was a 25' roll.
It's not expensive, and stops crud building up between the fenders and bedsides.

I didn't like the quality of the many vinyl products out there, and the VW welting did not seem to be wide enough to extend the entire distance of the fender flange. I found a source for real rubber welting, and was happy with the results.

I used the welting as pictured in DADS50's post both on my front and rear fenders with success. As shown in his photo cutting those types of bolt reliefs is key to a good fit (and 3M weatherstrip glue). I sharpened a 1/2 pipe nipple on my bench grinder as a punch to make the holes and the cut the remainder with scissors. It has held up well and while the factory may not have applied it to the rear fenders I think it finishes them off.
I will take a close-up shot but here you can see the welt on the rear.

I guess I figured that the welting worked from above but didn't work so great from beneath. I like the idea of the welting fitting the entire width of the flange.

Paul - what year vehicle did you use to get your welting?

Thanks for the help!

Hey Paul - never-mind. I see that year does not matter, it is all the same. This is good looking stuff and comes in several colors.

Thanks again.

for those of you interested, you could also make your own welting in whatever color you wanted. I saw a video/tutorial somewhere along the web. Probably what I will do when time comes, I can't recall ever seeing a brown welting which is what I'd go for

you can make welting using upholsterer techniques, like this door seal custom made for my bus
