I pulled the 235 this morning and just had to open it up to see what's wrong. #4 rod bearing is so bad I could move it maybe 1/8" by hand. he crank journal is pretty scratched up. Is it worth getting the crank ground? Do they even make undersized babbit bearings? Or should I just start searching for a good used cankshaft?

What year of 235 do you have? They have used insert rod bearings since about 1954. The older babbitted rods can be bored to take inserts. You could get the crankshaft measured by a shop to see what your options are.

If the crank throw hasn't been turned before it could be turned to as much as .030 under....
I don't know if NAPA still offers cranks for these or not....

Its also common to weld the journal and turn the journals .010" under. Then you would get a set of babbitted rods for the .010" journal size. It's getting harder to find someone to do babbitting anymore, so you may have to do the insert bearing conversion as mentioned. You will just have to find out what your local shops are capable of doing.

truckernix,

After checking previous posts, it looks like it is a low-pressure 1946 235 (babbitted rods)?

with that much wear on the rod, the crank is probably junk. Get an accurate measurement of all the rod journals with a micrometer and see how much wear and out of round you're dealing with. Then decide whether you need a regrind or a replacement. Yes, there are plenty of undersize Babbit rods- - - -they're on Ebay all the time.
