The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Engine Shop 54 235 Head

Just received word from Micron re: the head on my '54 235- He's got it cleaned up and magnafluxed- one crack- not too bad - he will get that repaired-head was .005 out of plane ( flat) so he'll get that flat again- along with valve job to include new vales and springs- just thought I'd post the progress on this part of the build. Mike will forward pictures of the repair as it goes and I'll post them here-

Valve stem on 2 exhaust was sticking pretty badly for me- the stem was pretty gummed up Mike said it took a bit to get them all out of their guides- All were gummed up to some degree- two cracked guides that will be replaced as well.

Which cylinder had the crack in the head on it?? How do they fix the crack? Weld it or pin it??

That looks like a pretty substantial crack to me. If it were mine, I would be looking for another head.

The machinist said it was worth repairing- I'm taking his word on this- he's the one doing the repairs- if it was too bad he would have told me to scrap it. The rest of the head was in better shape- I was surprised I didn't actually see that crack when I looked over the head before I brought it in. That crack is at #2

I hear so many talk about all of the cracked heads. Do all cracks leak? Are the cracks caused by catastrophic over-heating right before the truck was parked for good?

Stovebolt heads just have a nasty habit of cracking. Heads that were once considered to be junk get repaired now because the supply of good heads at the salvage yards has almost dried up.

If your guy is doing the repair himself, you should be all set. It gets a little murky when they send it out and someone else does the repair. There is no doubt that it can be repaired by the right person. Personally I was burned once on a crack repair and the memory will not go away!
