i bought some new knobs for the side and front vent but its not clear to me how they fit.
do they glue on? they have a cross shaped slot at the back, one slot having parallel sides the other tapered.
if i push the knob on the arm with the arm located in the parallel slot its too lose and if i use the tapered slot it wont go on.
confused (yet again)

The wire shaft is permanently bonded inside the knob. Replacements are left to the installers discretion as to how they are bonded. If this is the case with the '49 the slots are simply the manufacturer's way of giving the installer options. Having said all that it's possible the '49 is nothing like the '38 and everything I just said doesn't apply. Hopefully for both of us someone with '49 experience will chime in. Good luck with it.

I used electrical tape to snug up the fit good enough that it works if I don't really pull on it when operating the vent. The original one lasted 65 years,
so yours shouldn't have to come off till the great grandkids
restore it next time round. Even then, they can just cut the
knob off and clean up the lever with a file.

It lasted about 67 years the first time, the epoxy should hold it for a while. should hold up better than the original ones, which were
cellulose acetate, which doesn't hold up to time.
Any way you look at it, they are now doubt gonna out last all of
us, if they don't fall off.
