216's are supposed to use 20w in most climates.

If that truck really has 20 year old ND in it you better stay with 20 W ND. HD will break lose all the dirt. Brings to mind all the stories my father told of guys blowing engines by changeing to HD oil.

if it dosen't need fixed, break it

I have no clue what is in it. But the truck has been sitting since 1979 or earlier. It was like water coming out, but I saw no chunks or sludge.

Since summer is coming, i would run at least SAE 30. Detergent or not? Look at the inside of the filler cap. If it's clean, someone has probably been running detergent oil and it won't hurt to stick with it. Does the engine have an oil filter? It will keep most of the dirt out of the crankcase. In my case, my 216 was using a quart of SAE 30 every 300 miles, so I switched to 20w-50. Oil use dropped to a quart in 500 miles.

If it's been 20 years since the engine ran, I would remove the rocker cover and pull the coil wire. Crank the engine until oil comes out through the valve train. Then replace the cover and start the old gal. And change the oil at 500 miles the first time.

by now most old engines have had hd oil in them allready cause you pull in a gas station and ask for a quart of nd oil and the station guy sez what heck is that?? so hd gets put in anyway. in the summer time i like 20w-50w racing oil in a old high milage motors grin

This thing hasn't seen a gas station since the 70's smile
I went ahead w/ ND this time. And I doubt it will see over 50 miles in the next year. I may haul some on the farm but that is about it for this ol' rig. The farm is only 100 acres.
