Gage or sending unit? where is sending unit on 350 V8? | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | could be either, sender is cheap and easy to replace, location varies, but usually front of intake near stat housing [some years on the side of the head], should be pretty obvious .... also a good idea to use a laser thermometer on the housing and rad hoses to check what's really happening Bill | | | | | Joined: Oct 2013 Posts: 137 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Oct 2013 Posts: 137 | I love the idea of a laser thermostadt, but I'm guessing expensive? Can you rent them? | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | years ago an infrared thermometer was expensive, not much nowadays, most auto stores will have some Bill | | | | | Joined: Oct 2013 Posts: 137 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Oct 2013 Posts: 137 | Tks Bill. Got one today for less than $30. Engine temp is pretty normal. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | lucky you! when I got mine for my business ages ago it was about $200 .... so maybe you just need to take the gauge info as all it really was meant for, an indicator of normal, deviation from that tells you something's gone wrong and it's overheating .... you might have a bad gauge or the wrong sender and you might get a better read by changing one or both, but still the gauge wasn't originally a precision instrument, sudden changes from 'normal' is what counts

The gauge on the other hand looks a bit time consuming..... if I can find one. It moves such a small amount that you have to assume it's not functioning at all. I'm hoping its the sensor.
Also, can appreciate the cost improvement on my infared tool. I paid over $3grand for one to trouble shoot bearings on a high speed production line - 20+ years ago. And thought I had a real deal! | | | | | Joined: Oct 2013 Posts: 137 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Oct 2013 Posts: 137 | Good news for me. It was a bad sensor! | | |
