It's a little difficult to re-align the fixture, but any machinist with more than three brain cells to rub together should be able to turn a sufficiently accurate mandrel to hold the parts in alignment while some rivets or shoulder bolts are installed. I figured a histrength bolt would thread through the block and thread thru the bracket. It could be a thread on the bracket. It is a rivet because there is no slot or crosstop on the head of the bolt. Visegrip screwdriver? And then deal with the alignment with the heliccal gear on the cam! I lean towards dead block, because of the alignment complications. Nowhere in the catalogs can you find the brakcet and tru pins.
Actually I do not no the answer...the truth. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,787 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,787 | The bracket is factory-installed, and should not be disturbed during normal maintenance. There is absolutely no reason to remove it. It maintains the alignment between the oil pump and the distributor shaft, which is driven from a gear on the camshaft. If it gets removed for some reason, like by an over-zealous dismantler, it would be necessary to fabricate a very precisely-made alignment shaft to hold the bracket in place while it is riveted or bolted back into position. I need the part from a cracked block because taking the part from a good block is like heresy. I haven't found it in any catalogs.
Hotrod Jerry, I recall ya mentioned you have access to a flock of 235 ci's, 1958-62. Would you consider sending me that part? Send it to Tucker Auto Parts in Henderson Nevada, I could pick it up there. Its got to be worth at least a case of beer. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,787 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,787 | I'd have to trash a good block myself, but I'd be happy to do some measuring and maybe send you enough dimensions to have a pump mount fabricated. Personally, I think it's a lot better idea to find a good block with the bracket still installed to build up, and let the one with the missing bracket go to scrap. Now if we were dealing with a 1902 Whizzmobile block or something else made of unobtanium, working with what's available would be necessary. 235's simply aren't that scarce. I was assuming you were trying to reinstall a part after somebody had a stupid attack and removed it. Jerry

Jerry, I am wore out from this. Everybody I have talked with and have done biz with have been exceptionally great people...except for The Engine Center, in Indiana. Had I found their biz reviews sooner than I did, I would not have done biz with them. Their reply was 'we don't care what other people say'. Every one of the complaints about them is what they did to me...looks like a pattern. Currently I am working hard not to go to the dark side. I thank you for your attention. I will post about this next engine. ps This will make four engines I have. Gads. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 58 hmmm. | | hmmm. It has that really cool chevrolet logo pressed into it. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,787 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,787 | I'm a little confused- - - -did the Engine Center sell you a block without the oil pump fixture installed? From the online complaints about that place it sounds like a real ripoff operation, especially when they use a UPS store address instead of letting people know where to find them. If I'd been treated like some of the people who are doing the griping I'd be doing a little Louisville Slugger counseling! Jerry

| | | | | Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 58 hmmm. | | hmmm. Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 58 | They sold me a longblock 235 ci. When it arrived, they included a boxed up oil pump and and an engine gasket kit. The oil pump brackcet had been removed, and none replaced. I brought the matter to their attention and they replied that they remove the bracket for engine cleaning and they do not prodvide a bracket, and further they do not care what other people say.
I will sell the thing to someone that thinks the bracket can be replaced. That way they will get a really good deal from me and I can recoup some losses. And then we can find out if the new bracket can indeed be replaced and the engine runs,...
Meanwhile, it is lesson learned, one foot in front of the other, and proceed. Plus I love the rocker arm cover, wore-out levi blue pateena with chevrolet embossed right on it. So cool. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2014 Posts: 29 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Aug 2014 Posts: 29 | Before ya sell a long block at a loss...perhaps call the GM 6 Cylinder guro. Tom Langdon at Stovebolt Engine Company. He worked for GM as senior engineer for years. Betcha he can tell you how to get it done/aligned ready to start.

Bad juju all around. It's much better to do your own work or deal with a local builder. It's fixable, but only with a bracket from a junk block and some very careful fitting. Jerry
