The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Paint and Body Shop Compresser

I have a 2.75 hp peak,1.5 hp running, compresser that only pushes 4 cfm at 40 psi. Think this is ok to use with a hvlp spray gun? I just want to paint primer/sealer and mabe a few small parts like the bumper and grill.

Sorry to say, but you're not going to be able to paint much of anything with that size compressor. Any HVLP gun worth it's salt will require 8-10 cfm and many require more than that. Your compressor will run constantly to try and keep up, generating more heat and moisture......bad stuff. Better look around for something bigger, much bigger if you plan to do much painting. you didnt say how big your tank is but it should work just fine set the regulater at 45 get a water trap and mount it on your air line at at least 7 feet in the air when your spraying you may have to stop every minute or to to let the compressor catch up but iv used a small compressor for years with very good resalts you will need at least a 6 gallon tank you could plum a old propane tank in line on your air hose if your tank is smaller than 6 gallons good luck you can also get a low air cap for your gun i did that on one crafstman gun that i have

my 1 hp. 6 gallon also runs a 6 inch da. just fine again i stop ever 5 min a and let it catch up but for body work it works good i have a big bruiser now that will run sand blasters and about anything but i wont part with my old one its to handy
