Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 734 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 734 | I'm repainting inside Shelley's (1952 1/2 ton) cab with the original charcoal brownish color. On the dash, there's a stainless strip across the top and bottom of the radio speaker grille. What color should the raised ribs of the grille be? Pretty sure the recessed ribs should be the charcoal brown, but I've seen the raised ribs in everything from tan to gold color. Anybody know what's correct for original?
I understand these '52 and '53 Korean War era trucks lacked chrome. How much stainless trim did they put in the cab then?

My 53 deluxe cab needs aloy for the inside. | | | | | Joined: May 2001 Posts: 71 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: May 2001 Posts: 71 | I think Carter's catalog has a pretty good authenticity section that deals with this. On the '50, the raised ribs are polished stainless, the indented ones are champagne (cab interior color). I believe the entire panel was painted on the war years trucks. I'll see if I can find the source on this. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 734 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 734 | Look under "original radio speaker..." topic in the Lounge (on down a ways now, try page 2 of the lounge). Some folks answered this question for me there, and I believe they are pretty much correct.
I doubt that the middle raised ribs were stainless or chromed on any of the trucks. I doubt this because the entire radio speaker grille would have had to have been stainless (or chrome) as well as the glovebox door. I've not heard of the radio speaker grill itself being produced that way, although its upper and lower strips certainly were, as was the glovebox door.
But, I could be wrong!

The outer skin is stainless, as are the ash tray face and the speaker grille. I checked last night and found this: On 52-53 trucks the exterior chrome was light gray painted steel (I assume not the door handles). I think this applied to the interior stainless as well, including the wide upper and lower stainless trim pieces on the dash. Carter carries this paint color. Check their catalog or website. | | |
