My question is, do I seal the gasket to the pump or to the block before putting it back on? The shop manual is kinda vague and I've never done this before. | | |

The spray hi-tack red worked on my '60 235 water pump. Spray both sides of gasket and stick gasket on pump, then bolt pump to engine.

I guess you would seal the gasket to the valve cover only and not apply any sealant to the head. That way you can take it on and off the head for valve adjustments, etc. Is that correct? | | |

I now follow the advice I read on this forum a year or two ago: use "yellow death" adhesive between the cork gasket and the valve cover (and/or the cork gasket and the oil pan) and no adhesive on the other side. "Yellow death" is, I think, 3M weatherseal adhesive (comes in yellow and black). What you describe is the same principle but different adhesive.
