| | THANKS!
For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Apr 2010 Posts: 45 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2010 Posts: 45 | I have a vintage air ac system that was installed by my mechanic. He added a toggle switch rather than wiring it through the ignition key. When I stopped the truck I hit the toggle and it kept running. With further inspection I found that the fuse installed just behind the switch was melted to a mush of plastic. It is easy enough to replace the fuse, but what would have caused it to over heat and not blow? | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,752 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,752 | A loose, dirty, or poorly-crimped connection can develop a significant amount of heat without exceeding the current capacity of a fuse. Installing a fuse way above the current carrying capacity of the wire involved can also lead to overheating, such as using a 30 amp fuse on an 18 gauge wire, for instance. Fuses are supposed to protect wires, not the end item in the circuit. It sounds like you need to find a better electrician, before this guy burns your truck down! Jerry
