Went to put the cam in this morning and bearings are to big for the block the cam and bearings fit together fine but when I pulled out the old bearings the new ones are about the thickness of the bearing larger. Yes, the 216/235 splash-oiler engines and the early full-pressure engines run a Federal Mogul 1094-M cam bearing set with the small-diameter cam bearing journals. Late 54 and up 235/261 engines have bigger cam bearings, F-M cam bearing set #1170M or equivalent. (From my Federal-Mogul master bearing specification catalog) You're likely to have problems finding a new small-journal cam, and boring the block for the bigger cam bearings can be difficult and expensive. I'd suggest purchasing another cam gear and thrust plate if the budget will accomodate it, rather than trying to recycle the existing gear. That's particularly true if it's already been on and off another cam previously. They're intended to be a one-time installation. Chances are somebody in the swap meet forum can use the big-journal cam with the timing gear already installed.

I have installed cam gears without a press by heating the hub, even the fiber ones, but it takes some practice to get the preheat right. If the machine shop screws up the installation, they're on the hook to replace the part. If you mess it up yourself, you're out of pocket the cost of another gear. Bottom line- - - -you make the call!

I pulled the truck apart 25 years ago and now would like to get it back together already have a gear and thrust plate ordered. I think I'll take your advice and have the machine shop install it for me. I think I will keep the other cam for now if I screw up this one I have a 1955 235 that I can use and if that don't work I have 2 216's that run. Hopefully I don't have that much trouble but I do plan on getting this truck back together. | | |
