I have never broken one after doing that. An old timer showed me that trick (very likely your elder.  ) I don't know how it works, but it does. I don't know how electricity works either, but the lights still come on and I still get a bill. Carl

I did find out why the gasket burned through. The bolts were little more than hand tight. I don't know what, if any, the torque specs are but I know they'd be tighter than that. The folks who stuck the engine back in after the rebuild seemed to have forgotten to tighten them down.
