So, I had my LD Muncie 3-speed rebuilt professionally while I restored my truck. It sat on the shelf for 2 years. Anyway, upon completion of the restoration, the transmission worked well, but leaked oil from the shifter shaft seals. I ordered new seals from Chev of the 40's, pulled the side cover to replace the seals. What I discovered was very dirty oil after only about 50 miles of use. So, maybe the rebuilder did not clean the parts well. Maybe even a bit of metal particles in the oil.

Also, I found that the shifter shaft retaining bar is mounted on two spacer studs. One of the studs was broken and the bar was able to move about some. Easy fix: cut off both studs from either end of the spacer, drilled it out and installed a 1/4" bolt through the entire assembly.

On to the shaft seals. The new seals did do not fit in the bore tight and simply fall out. They fit the shaft, but would not stay put. I first thought I would use gasket sealant to glue them in, but was worried about longevity. So, I pulled them out, cleaned them up, reinstalled and then glued them in with red Loctite. Hopefully, they will stay put.

Good thing I pulled the cover to replace the seals. Then on to the next leak which I believe is coming from the oil filter canister (used)/line fittings (new). I think the canister might have a hole in it that only leaks once pressurized sufficiently. I am probably gong to pull the canister and cap the fittings and run without the filter for awhile until I solve all oil leaks.

Repair photo . You will notice the bolt on the right (repair) and the original double studded spacer on the left. Worked great.
