Hey all

I decided to mount my passenger side engine side pan. There is a perfectly placed hole where the oil filler goes thru it.

When I went to put the oil filler back into the block , the mounting bracket that screws into the side of the block is too short. It doesnt reach the bracket mounting hole.

Note that Im running a 261 engine in my 46 2 ton.
But Im using the original 235 oil filler. Is the oil filler hole in a different location relative to the bracket mounting hole on a 261 vs a 235?

obviously the part numbers for the fillers will be different as the 261 oil filler has a pipe running back to the intake manifold, while the 235 is just a pipe pointing down at the ground.

Are you aware that a 261 could have come with full flow oil system and that the 235 was always bypass oil filter if any?
Also the 261 can be changed reasonably simply to use a full flow oil filter.
This means that if your 261 was or will be configured for full flow oil filtration the old 235 bypass oil filter is not correct and will cause engine damage if used in place of a full flow filter.

Or are you just trying to install a bypass filter alone on the 261?

Do you have pictures of what you're working with?

If the oil-filter-line holes in the block are 1/2" NPT, you have a 1958-63 261 set-up for full-flow oil filtration.

Here are locations of various codes - post what you find and you can ID the year of the engine.

If you do not have the original full-flow filter canister, you can use any modern-style, spin-on filter-head/assembly.

It sounds like you have PCV-system plumbing lines that go between the air cleaner, the valve cover, and the closed-tube that replaces the road-draft-tube on the passenger side of the block.

"Filler"- - - - -"Filter"- - - - -the last time I looked in the dictionary, those were different words. I believe the OP is trying to put the 216 road draft tube in the 261 block, and is having a problem with the attaching bracket. IIRC, the 216/splasher 235 oil filler cap was incorporated into the top of the road draft tube, wasn't it?

Just fabricate a different clamp to hold the road draft tube in- - - -it should work just fine!

Yes, Jerry, and that is why it seems like he is also referring to PCV plumbing that was common on 261s. If an open road draft tube is used (from any 216, 235, 261 that had one), he'll have to deal with the PCV plumbing (if that is what he is describing).

yes, I can fabricate a new side mounting bracket, just was trying to avoid doing that.

just to clarify

1) engine is a 261
2) engine is using the original 235 road draft tube. (truck is a 46 2 ton, so it came with a babbitt 235)
3) mounting bracket on the original 235 road draft tube is too short - it doesnt reach the mounting hole on the side of the block.

My mistake, I saw filter when it was filler... and ran with it.

Still, a picture or several would be real helpful. I know the forum isn't picture friendly but links to pictures can help solve a lot of troubles and questions quicker than back and fourth discussions and confusions.
