I got the hubs off the rear axle and I want to remove the backing plates, but there is a sheet metal oil retainer that looks to be pressed on the axle. Anyone know how it comes off or does it have to be removed to get the backing plate off? Thanks

I think what you are referring to an axle is actually called the spindle. That ring is part of the slinger. It should just tap off from the back. You will need to remove it to get the backing plate off.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

Its just stuck on there from years of grease/grime. Tap it gently with a hammer from the back or use a pry bar to work it off the spindle bore.
