Hi bolters
Going to start working on my grill.
I think it is just chromed steel as a magnet sticks.
can I use my mig to weld it?
buff it clean and have at it?

I think I would try to lay down a bead in the back in an area that isn't noticeable first, just to see of it is indeed weldable using GMAW.

The magnet trick doesn't necessarily mean it'll arc weld satisfactorily.

Yes, you can use your MIG and it should work out just fine. I don't know the condition of the chrome or if you plan to rechrome or repaint, but any welding near the chrome will damage it and require replating, if that's your plan.

Sorry I've been busy with work etc.

Ill try it on some spare pieces I have and see if it works ok.
